why was Pink Floyd popular?

easily one of the worst bands of the 70s/80s

their hits are OK but they only have like 5 of them. they released 100 albums and only have 5 listenable songs.

literally everything between "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "Dark Side of the Moon" is pure garbage, the latter album also being pure druggy retardation.

why were they popular?

Their live shows were the first of their kind with laser lights, visuals, that sort of thing. They put on performances that people who saw them probably still remember vividly to this day. They had top notch equipment and their music was amazing, in my opinion. They were far ahead of their time.

Also a movie was made in collaboration with one of their albums The Wall. Their albums felt like listening to a story and were good from start to finish.

What do you consider good music?

Pink Floyd takes you on a journey, but you have to be open to it. Drugs are one way to do it but not the only way.

I see you never went through The Wall phase in Jr or high school. Sorry for you. Some of the best lyrics ever.

“Did they get you to trade, Your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange, A walk-on part in a war, For a lead role in a cage?”

Agree. Their songs are just boring slogs that drone on. There's no climactic point to any of their music.

They definitely aren't a hits band, but nobody's ever claimed they were. It's pretty much said so much it's overdone but it's true - you have to listen to their albums in full and in order.

And "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" (between Piper and Dark Side) is art, you whore.

To each his own but they have sold more albums worldwide than the Beatles. Both groups released about the same number of albums. So I'd say a lot of people would disagree with you.

They're a band that reigned supreme during a time when you put on an entire album, not one song at a time.

There aren't very many bands left that release an album that carries an overarching theme front to back, right now the goal is purely to make disposable singles.

I agree. I used to hate Pink Floyd but I developed a taste for them as I got older. You have to really immerse yourself into the song and let it do its thing to you. The thing is a lot of people listen to music just to have some pleasant white noise while they play video games or whatever. Others get compelled to just sit or lay down, put on headphones, and take in the whole experience and let the music wash over you and roll you in. It's a feeling you get from their music that's always trying to be replicated.

LPs in general have the same length as classical symphonies which were also recorded on vinyl at the very beginning

It's why you have 3-4 minute songs and 30-40 minute albums with overarching themes as one complete work

For this kinda music it's best to listen to the whole album from start to finish like a movie or symphony

If there were aliens among us and they asked us to send them one of the top songs humans have created, it would have to be one of the songs in the Animals album

Found out about Pink Floyd back in 2014 and got my friends and others into them as well since then never gotten old.

They did that trippy The Wall cartoon movie and they did the dark side of Oz crazy match up.

Pretty much every pot head in the world would put that chit on in their living room every time they got high with their friends. Really nothing else like watching the wizard of oz high as balls with pink floyd blasting in your crummy apartment at 3AM and all your friends laughing their asses off.

Shouldn't you be off shiiitting on folks who don't live in megatropolis cities or something?

I remember watching The Dark Side of Oz once, or most of it, with a buddy a long assss time ago. He put it on when we were absolutely ripped, and I admit I thought it was great.

Part of me wonders if its mostly just in peoples' heads, though. I've tried watching it again since then, and it never felt the same, no matter how baked I was.
