Is working out to change your appearance body dysmorphia?

Well is it? If you are super strict about needing to go to the gym...change the appearance of body parts...super regimented diet...supplements...you think it makes you a better version of yourself, etc than I think you are mentally unhealthy.

I think it's all a form of body dysmorphia that society turns a blind eye to. Like a mass delusion.

Shouldn't a person be happy with how their body naturally looks and performs instead of chasing some idealized form?

Now if you're like the old people that hit up the gym to just maintain muscle mass and joint health...that's something different.

if doing things you enjoy doing...for example hiking or swimming or basketball result in some physical changes to your body as a byproduct that's one thing...but to enter a gym with the goal of changing the look of your body (unless your obese of something) is entering the realm of mental illness known as body dysmorphia.

if you have fat and you want to lose fat I don't see how that could be considered body dysmorphia

it's only body dysmorphia when an objectively thin person thinks they're fat and starves themself more

Wanting to get in good shape is not body dysmorphia even if its just because you want to look better. It makes sense to want to look better

The key word you used is "good shape" -- what is good shape? To an anorexic person good shape is looking like a pencil. To an obese person "good shape" may be being at a healthy weight their doctor tells them to be at. You walk in at 250lbs and something like 40% body fat the doctor will say you need to get under 200lbs for example.

What about the people who are at a normal weight and don't meet any medical criteria for being out of shape yet they want to change the appearance of their body.

Body dysmorphia.

It's only body dysmorphia if you have a warped negative perception of your body that most people wouldn't agree with

Wanting to get jacked and be a sick kunt because you'll attract more chicks or whatever reason is different from that

Hope this helps

If you're body is healthy according to any doctor you go to and you feel the need to change things about it's appearance...you are mentally disturbed. The need for validation from other people doesn't make you any less mentally disturbed.

Tired of people normalizing mental disturbances.

Just because your daddy thinks muscles look tough...and your momma thinks she has a strong boy...it doesn't change the diagnosis of body dysmorphia.

To anorexic person being shaped like a pencil is the idealized form of attractiveness. In some cultures it's being fat.

If you lack confidence in your natural attractiveness and need to change the shape of your body through working out and a regimented diet...you are mentally disturbed.

Just because society as a whole becomes mentally disturbed and expects others to change their bodies to meet societies mentally disturbed standards of attractiveness...that doesn't make it any less of a mental illness.

Like I said...tired of mental disturbance being normalized. Mass delusion.

So society (not the media) as a whole is mentally disturbed for valuing attractive people and you're enlightened for accepting being fat?

So lifting weights as a healthy hobby is a mental disorder?

And a homo pretending to be a woman is perfectly mentally healthy?

Honk honk bro, til the honks just can't honk no more.

If you lift weights out of pure enjoyment from repetitively lifting something over and over than that's an odd hobby...BUT if you enjoy your hobby with no cares given about changing the shape of your otherwise healthy body. No body dysmorphia.

Is there science that says pursuing a goal of changing the shape of body parts on an otherwise healthy body will make it feel better?

Who said I accept being fat? Being fat is a health condition. Losing fat will of course change the shape of body parts. But a person that is already healthy according to any doctor that wants to change the shape of body parts through religious weight lifting and diet?

Body dysmorphia.

This sentence does not sound rational or sane.

People have gotten so obese that wanting to be fit and healthy is a mental disturbance?

I'd agree that obsessing over your image as a man is womanlike and insecure, and women do this by default.

But being insecure is just being insecure, not like a schizophrenic who needs anti-psychotics.

Society is pretty damn sick, and sociopaths succeed in a sick and twisted society.

Psychiatry is also a soft science, a social science, with a lot of corrupt quacks.

Person walks into the doctor at 250lbs and 40% bodyfat.

Doctor says you need to get under 200lbs to be at a healthy weight.

Person gets under 200lbs and doctor says they are healthy.

Now person goes back to the doctor weighing under 200lbs and says they need to change the shape of this body part and that body part...and get more definition here and there.

That person now needs a psychiatrist.

They suffer from body dysmorphia disorder because now their medically healthy body needs body parts shaped differently through years of weight lifting and religiously maintained dieting.

It's not an odd hobby.

The ancient Greeks and prehistoric humans lifted weights.

Being strong increases your chances of survival and mating as well. It's necessary for many jobs.

Being physically healthy and exercising regularly is only an "odd hobby" if you are physically unfit or just dyel.

In the USA, if you aren't overweight or obese, you are in the statistical minority. Healthy people exercise.

The ultimate cope would be try and gaslight the few remaining healthy people for just exercising.

"Oh, you're still healthy and fit? You actually enjoy exercise and the endorphins it releases?"

"Yeah, you just have body dysmorphia, cause I said so, you are actually sick and wrong and I'm better than you!"

"Sad, hope they can invent a pill for you to take, because wanting to exercise and be healthy is a mental disorder!"

Or they are just insecure.

Are you a psychiatrist?

You are creating imaginary strawmen then diagnosing them like you are a doctor.

I'm pretty sure if you gathered a group of 20 medical doctors they could come to a pretty definitive consensus on a person being at a healthy weight or not.

No there are several key factors that are required for it to be considered dysphoria.

You have to see an extreme flaw with your current body
And be obsessive about fixing it but never seeing it get get fixed

Like I cut some weight before vacations because it makes me feel good being extra lean. I like having a bit of muscle mass and definition because it makes me feel good.

I used to feel gross with my big rolls and gut and be embarrassed, but that went away and I don’t even care if I’m a bit flabby and leaning forward with shirt off where in the past I would be self conscious second shirt came off and only lean back to minimize belly.

So working out and changing myself a bit just brought me some confidence. I’m not obsessed, I can skip workout and I don’t think about it etc. but occasionally I still like pushing myself and getting in tip top shape because I enjoy the whole process.

You know homosexuality was classified as a mental illness until 1973?

Being "distressed" about being a homo became the new mental illness.

So that homos could further normalize their buttphucking in the eyes of the public.

Perhaps this gives the impression that a lot of aspects of psychiatry are more cultural than scientific.

So that "intellectuals" with academic sway can bullchit like OP and actually be taken seriously by smart people in charge of things.

"Homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) beginning with the first edition, published in 1952 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). This classification was challenged by gay rights activists in the years following the 1969 Stonewall riots, and in December 1973, the APA board of trustees voted to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1974, the DSM was updated and homosexuality was replaced with a new diagnostic code for individuals distressed by their homosexuality. Distress over one's sexual orientation remained in the manual, under different names, until the DSM-5 in 2013."

You haven't really refuted what I've said.

A healthy person that gets it in their mind that the shape of muscles on their body needs to change through regimented years or decades long weight lifting and diet changes has body dysmorphia.

I'm open to you changing my mind with sound reasoning.

"Becoming more attractive" is not sound reasoning. "Attractive" is just imaginary bullsheet society pulls out of the sky or that modern women decide to make a standard. Hell, there's LOTS of money to made in having society decide that otherwise healthy people need to meet some idealized shape of in regards to musculature. Physical attraction is a biological reality and physically fit people fulfill that evolutionary role.

Some people just enjoy lifting weights, it feels good, it's hard work but it gets your endorphins going.

So much marketing and business is based around making people feel insecure, but people enjoy playing sports and lifting weights.

I know it might seem strange, but some people enjoy putting in work in the gym or being professional athletes.
