I live in North Florida at the moment, I'm renting and my rent is basically a mortgage. Lease ends in one month from now. I'm already pre-approved for a loan and have looked at over 25 houses with my realtor, put in a couple offers too.

Of course with the housing market being so bad, I'm taking caution before I make offers.

So while I wait on getting a house, my plan is to live in my truck. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. Do you think this is a good idea? If it works out how I think it will, then I'll be saving like $2,500 extra.

I currently drive this Toyota Tacoma:



My Tacoma has a 5ft bed. My plan is to purchase the topper and tent below. The tent would add about an extra feet or so of leg room; I'm 6'1 tall. Then put an air mattress with a foam topper from amazon in there to sleep on it. I have slept on the air mattress and amazon foam topper in the past and it is very comfortable.





Now where would I park the truck to sleep? I'm thinking the Florida State Parks. I have to look at the pricing, but if it is cheap, I can rent a spot every 30 days or so at different Florida State Parks. Park the truck there, sleep over night, and then head to work. My work has gym, shower, etc.

Lastly of course it is Florida so it will be hot as balls, my plan is to make a portable A/C and use the outlet in my truck to power it.



A cooler this size can probably hold like 3 bags of gas station ice, about $7.00. I can just fill up nice ice every night. $7.00 x 31 days = $217

Minus the cost of the topper. I'll basically be paying $217 in ice and whatever the cost of renting spots at the Florida State parks.

Another thing I have to look into is getting some bear spray since there's black bears everywhere over here. I have an xdm elite 9mm, it probably won't stop a bear but possibly potentially other threats?

Any thoughts on this plan?

Fellow Floridabrah here. Sorry to say OP but that plan probably isn't the best.

- The heat and humidity would be miserable

- You can't just park your car and start camping anywhere in the parks here, if you're found outside of designated campgrounds you will be asked to move along

- Actual camping spots anywhere near the cities are booked waaaaay in advance and they're not cheap anymore

A better plan would just be to get a short term room rental or a spot at a monthly motel - not ideal, but smarter than trying to live out of your truck

Nope, thanks to this "secret" getting out and people abusing the courtesy most Florida Walmarts no longer allow overnight camping. Even the ones that are still cool with it (mostly the ones away from the big highways) only allow you to stop for the night, not live out of the parking lot for weeks or months on end

Bro will be in a truck that drives. He can go anywhere at that point his options are unlimited. He can go to the end of an old road and just camp out and be up by 6 am and headed to where ever else he has to go.

Sell the truck and go on an extended camping trip in the Florida swamps until you find the house you like.

Serious answer if you expect this will take you 4+ months to find your house you should just buy an RV for $10k. Cost would be about the same as continuing to rent (especially if going month to month where they charge you excessively like ass holes which makes no sense to me because if you're month to month if just extends the time they would need to re-lease it so why the surcharge?).

Can always sell the RV on the backend as well.

keep in mind too that you dont just buy a house and get the keys the next day. its a long slow process.

That cooler thing doesnt work either even in mild weather,. i tried it a few times and just ended up with a cooler with a hole in it that I had to throw away.
