If you think the traditional market is any less of a ponzi, I've got some bad news. Crypto is newer so it's more of a wild west and you have things like hacks and FTX, but stock brokers do similar shady stuff all of the time, such as pre and post market shenanigans when the public doesn't have an opportunity to trade, and they will freeze trading as well sometimes with extreme price volatility and won't let people get out of their positions. Robinhood has screwed people over many times.

ALL of these company valuations, crypto or otherwise, are imaginary and are only loosely (at best) tied to company profits/performance. If you're a CEO of a company, your goal isn't to make a ton of profit doing business operations. Your goal is to go public and make billions off of dummies buying your stock at insanely inflated pump prices so you can sell all your shares and become an instant billionaire.

It's all a scam. You yourself just have to be smart enough to be on the right side of things.

Lol @ thinking the market is just one big money party and we can all just put our money into mutual funds and make 8-12% for eternity and ride off into the sunset together. The market would never exist if it weren't for the motivation of winning your average joe's money. It's literally a competition with baseless numbers generated by hype.

What the hell are you on. In the stock market you buy equity of a company and have voting rights. Buy enough of the stock...you now control and "own" the company. That is not a scam. Trying to make short tern profits sure. But the literal mechanism of buying equity in a company is not a ponzi scheme.

The goal of a public ceo is to serve the interests of shareholders. Anytime they go outside that norm the board of directors (voted in by shareholders) can remove the ceo.

Tell me the last time someone who wasn't part of founding a company or major initial investor held or bought up enough shares to have any real say in what a company does. Your little vote as an average stock owner is about as significant as voting for the president. (AKA useless)

You're not buying equity in a company lmao.. wtf are YOU on. If you were buying equity in the company, you would be getting your equivalent % of profits straight from the payroll. You don't get that as a shareholder. jfc.

And before you mention dividends.. Dividends are rare and are not equity.

How come the fed can’t unwind ?

The system collapses if we go backwards, fed can only increase its balance sheet.

This happens all the time if you have enough money to buy a controlling interest. I literally work in this field. Sometimes it's a wealthy individual, a group of investors, or a corporation itself.

And you are buying equity. Upset about the dividend policy and return of profits to shareholders? Band together with other pissed off shareholders and vote in leadership that will do it. Not enough shareholders agreeing with you? Buy their shares so you have a controlling vote and can push all profits to shareholders yourself.

And of course dividends aren't equity. They are a distribution. You can however use said distributions to buy more shares.

You have NO IDEA what you are talking about

You're talking about the 1% (probably less than that) of people with millions/billions. For 99% of people this stuff you're saying doesn't apply.

And how are you in this field and don't even know what equity is. Unreal.

But it doesn't make it a scam. If you only buy .00008% of Microsoft, should you have influence and voting power that's worth more than a 30% shareholder?
Doesn't make it a scam at all. Just means you don't have enough money to influence public company decision making. That's not a damn ponzi scheme.

THAT part doesn't make it a scam at all, lol. I agree with you that it at least gives shareholders SOMETHING of value even if it's just a measly vote. But that doesn't erase the fact that the market (in any form) exists to funnel money from the low end/middle of the bell curve of intelligence to the top, intentionally. It's why the stock market exists, especially in modern times when you can use media to inflate stock prices.

Ah, a weekly “crypto is a scam” thread

Do go on.

Don’t forget to talk about Elon Musk going to jail, Tesla going bankrupt, EVs going away, and of course throw in Long Covid boosters while you are at it. You are a good obedient sheep. Some random cretin gets on TV and says something, and you repeat it. Makes sense/

I guess he knows better than George Soros, Biden, and multiple billionaires who are heavily invested in Crypto. Let’s all pretend people don’t make money in stock market, and that some random cretin on Bill Maher understands things and speaks the truth.

This thread hurts my head now

Stock market is a ponzi because if margin calls go out like they should when fed unwinds the whole things collapsing and everyone’s left with jack chit.

Also all the whales are already out of crypto, institutions can’t get out because they abused the leverage so hard and can’t unwind.

No idea why this got turned into arguing over what % of a company you own.

(You actually don’t cede and co hold your papers for you and dtcc and market makers give out bullchit shares in the sake of liquidity)

If institutions are stuck in crypto right now then that's great news for anyone who is already bought in, because you know those guys are gonna do anything they can to pump it back up and offload it on wallstreetbets memers.

If you get in the ring with Anderson Silva and he f*cks you up, it doesn’t mean MMA is a scam. It means you are an idiot.

Never said crypto was a scam. It’s clearly unregulated and people get what they sign up for.

It is a Ponzi scheme tho and so is the market and for the reasons I said. They need continual influx of liquidity and growth to function.

It’s a Ponzi.

lol indeed.. it's pretty nuts that FTX stole everyone's money and BTC bottomed out right after. All of those people had their money stolen AND they are potentially missing the next crypto bullrun now because of either no funds or lost trust. Brutal.

Gold was under 500 an oz two decade ago.

Plenty of people sitting on dragon mounds, you don’t get to buy in at fair value, and that’s not its first rodeo of getting hoarded lmao, prolly most hoarded metal on planet.

crypto isnt that different from regular currency.

- theres infinite number of coins, anyone can make one at any time
- its far more volatile
- its unregulated or nearly unregulated
- the government doesnt seem to be interested in bailing it out vs the recent bank runs
- the government will eventually look to replace all coins with THEIR coin that they control
- the government manipulates the money supply and manipulates stock prices

they're basically both Ponzi schemes and the people controlling both are looking out for their own interest.

Im watching bernie madoff documentary now and watched the one on FTX a few months ago, its basically the same thing, people giving their money (and nearly all of it, parking their networth in one place with no diversification) to some dude they heard was hyped up and presented to them as an investment genius and they have no real understanding of what the money is supposed to be actually doing other than being promised unrealistic sky high returns.
Wow dude you watched some documentaries? I'm listening to you now

If you are a stock holder of apple and some guy buys their headphones, you do grasp that you get part of that money, yes? Earnings seems to be a word you are missing all together.

Wish I didn't listen to all this fearmongering bullsh*t in 2011 when Bitcoin was hovering around $100 right in front of my own eyes. They said it was a scam too back then. Kiss my ass.
