How come no one here is complaining about 15 minute cities?

All the conservatives on social media are complaining about it but I don't see it mentioned here.

I’ve definitely seen some UK bros have “complaints” about the plans.

I imagine that the outrage here will be far more noticeable when the concept grows a bit more legs in the US.

Right now, it’s still seen as a “yea right, I’d like to see them try it here” kinda thing. That’ll change once the propagandists really start pushing the idea here, and when people start seeing their city board members endorsing it.

I don’t think we’re too far from that point.

Just trying to buy something at a store, and scanning my wrist-implant chip to pay for my goods. Alarm bells blare.

Umm. What's the problem? No one is forcing anyone to live there.People can always move to the suburbs or to some small town if they don't like it.
It'll guarantee become a mandatory thing in blue states (i.e. WA, OR, CA) as soon as they decide to move to this "green" way of living.

I'd rather not be told where I can and cannot go because the government wants to continue to nitpick every part of my life.

Its not going to be the utopian idea your comment is making it out to seem.

People don’t trust that their governments won’t eventually force/coerce the population into something like a 15 minute city.

Looking at the last 100 years of human history and the lengths that political elites have gone to in order to assert control over populations, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think it’s possible.

The last 3 years also opened many eyes as to what some of these monsters are capable of.

Then you realize that “Smart Cities” are already being planned and built as we speak, and see politicians talking about them more and more.

Then you stumble upon this video:

It comes down to trust, and there really isn’t much reason to trust the folks who benefit most from us living in 15 minute cities.

I'm confused. Everything within 15 minute walking distance is basically every city in the Netherlands here. Everyone just orders same day/next day delivery groceries. Uses public transport to go to work/family. No need for a car. If it's a bit further take an (electric) bike.

Depends, was that how the city was originally designed as, having things within a 15 minute radius? If so, then that's just how it was built.

What the US is proposing is to cut people off from being able to leave their 15 minute "cities" w/o being punished for it if they do so - higher car taxes, gas taxes, etc.

Not interested in the government limiting my freedom to go where I like in the name of "climate change".

Oh yeah that sucks. The cities here are old and you can barely get around the city center by car, a lot of small one way roads or pedestrian only.

Being locked up in a 15 minute walking range sounds like some crazy movie idea.

I would love to live somewhere where it's easy to walk or bike everywhere. I love it at the beach, I park my car and just about everything is in walking distance. I wouldn't want to be stuck in a 15 min radius and not allowed to leave, though.

It's like that in Europe. I'm in Europe right now and it's amazing. Most of the europoors can't afford a car so a lot of them ride **** like motorized scooters and mopeds and other poor people transportation vehicles. Saw a couple euro****s holding each other on a motorized scooter like they were in Titanic. Was gay af

Its surprisingly such a great concept being able to leisurely walk over to the nearest supermarket 5 minutes away and the pharmacy 8 minutes away. There's a sense of community too and honestly it's so easy to hit 10k steps a day as a europoor. It's also hard as hell to be sedentary because of it.

You legit look better and feel better.

The issue with being a europoor is that those ****gits are poor as hell. I feel like a rapper here dropping cash on these peasants.

Europe is like that. Just sucks to live there cause they're all lazy welfare ****** who have no aspirations to make anything of their life aside from lounging around and smoking cigarettes. The career opportunities suck since europeans are legit rotters

I wouldn't mind a 15 minute city either - that's how most of Europe is and when I went to Romania to visit, how it was struct ed as well around apartment homes.

However, like I said, their whole plan is to have people shut in those 15 minute cities and then punish them for using transportation to get around.

Portland, where I live, is already destroying the streets and making commute a nightmare for cars, regardless of time of day.

They could connect cities via high speed trains. We will be transitioning to a post consumerist society and all be much poorer. People were warned about peak oil and also about climate change. No amount of crying will bring that wealth back, sadly.

I always love these comments.

They almost always get shot down when the "right-wing conspiracy/boogyman" is found out to be exactly what it is, the truth.

You'd think after 3 years of the government reaching their hands in people's cookie jars that they'd wake up to realize that control over us is what they ultimately want.

Oh well, ignorance is bliss I suppose.

From what little I've seen on the topic, the engineering feats required to actually design a city that can both house a significant number of citizens AND make everything they might need a 15 minute walk or less is staggering, and not practical in the near term future. Even ignoring the civil feats required, it would pose several pretty serious safety issues i.e. fires, natural disasters, terrorism, and the like.

Once you realize it has less to do with everything being in close proximity, and more to do with what is allowed and not allowed within that area, you will begin to understand why some people are concerned.
Or just look at the people proposing the idea.

Agreed that it is a beautiful idea, but one that doesn't support a large population, unless you massively increase density.

While I like the idea of having everything within walking distance, I refuse to live in a 10,000 person apartment complex to make it a reality
