Meanwhile it's the year 2023 and instead we've got remote-controlled longboards, "electric vehicles," which leverage the same asphalt we've used since the early 1900's (sort of, only after 2002 did NAPA deem modern asphalt to be non-hazardous for air pollution). Cell phones, internet, and social media, humans delivering groceries/restaurant-food/alcohol to your door step (some areas technically have drones for Amazon packages). We're "at the cusp" of a lot of things like space travel vacations, revolutionary AI, sex robots, chips in the brain, but a lot of those might not even see entry level production till the 2030's.

What did you hope the world would look like by now?

Personally I expected by the 2020's for robots to be in every restaurant in place of waiters, grocery stores in place of clerks (not self check out lmao). Also not necessarily hovercars, but maybe hoverboards, and for cars to evolve beyond wheels in some capacity at least. Airfare to be nearly as cheap as cabs, with more options than just airport<-->airport. And Nuclear energy to be the primary source of energy for all first world countries.
