Yes, I go 3 or 4 times a year for work. It's pretty great and everything is cheap. Knowing even some Spanish will help. You'll be approached by lots of hookers. Stay safe. Medellin is amazing. Don't stray too far from the tourist areas at night.

While you're in Santa Marta make sure you take the short trip to Tayrona National Park and hike or horseback to the beach area in my pic. It's beautiful. Guatape looks really nice as well, but I did not get a chance to check it out while in Medellin.

Fun fact: ******* only cost about $1,000 a kilo max in Colombia. 1/20th of the cost here lol

Been to both Santa Marta and Cartagena.

Lived in Bogota for a few months.

You're going to love Santa Marta. Getting there is a trip if you're taking ground transportation from Cartagena. Try a "lemonada de coco" while there.

+1 for Parque Tayrona. Go in a group if you can. It's a safe park, but it's not safe to go as one person on any trek like that.

While in Cartagena, go see the Rosaria Islands. Probably the most beautiful beaches in Colombia.

Cash is king in Colombia, and always pay exact if you can. "Falsos" or counterfeit bills are everywhere. Got hit with that chit a few times.

Avoid hawkers. Just shake your head, don't make eye contact, and say "gracias". "no gracias" is rude for some reason.

Hawkers are relentless in Santa Marta, but they'll eventually leave you alone.

Always buy your own drinks, and always make them open beers in front of you.

It's a bunch of fun brah. The Colombianas love the gringos for sure. Just be careful because you're also a target that stands out to criminals.

Did you have a burner phone over there or carried your regular cell?

To add on to the Rosario Islands (which I did not visit) also check out Isla Baru while in Cartagena. You can stay on the beach in Baru for relatively cheap and they also have amazing beaches. Much nicer than the Cartagena area.

I heard the food in colombia is nothing to write home about - what are your experiences?

I prefer Mexican food much much more to be honest. Colombian food is not my favorite, but there is certainly some good food to be had. Bandeja Paisa for brunch while you are in medellin is very good. Lechon/Tamales/Salchipapas are also good. You can find some good burgers and hot dogs there as well. I don't eat seafood, but Cartagena and Santa Marta for sure have some really fresh stuff. On the beaches in Cartagena/Baru you can order a plate of fried fish directly from your chair as people set up tents where they grill closer towards the street. You will probably get gringo taxed unfortunately. You will probably have to negotiate a little as they will upcharge you right off the bat. Beers on the beach in Cartagena should cost about 4-6k pesos each? (haven't been there for years but no more than $1.50)
