Just curious what everyone thinks on this and what they're going through.

When I first graduated college with a negative net worth due to student loans / car loan, job loss was a legitimate fear of mine - had some anxiety for some periods of time due to it, felt like if anything happened I'd either have to go into further debt for a while or live with family or something. I thought after paying off my debts this would go away.

Now I've got a 4-5ish months CoL emergency fund, plus another 8ish months liquid if I sold some non-retirement investments. And I still feel a degree of anxiety about it, to the point of feeling like I won't be satisfied until I've got my own house and a 6 months emergency fund on top of that too. I'm betting if/when I ever got to that point, I'd feel some semblance of anxiety for job loss until I had my house paid off SRS.

Maybe for me at least, things feel a little shaky due to our interest rates and inflation rates.

What's the misc's thoughts?

Follow your instincts and you will be better off than 99% of the mouth -breathers out there. Try to find ways to enjoy life on the way, but you are not unwise.

Self employed so job loss means I got convicted of a felony or I'm dead.

Software dev here. Not really, just afraid of being underpaid as my skillset keeps growing since i love learning in the field so much

They laid of a bunch of ITcels here the other month. Dudes legit leaving the building in tears. Couple of the guys had just bought big houses and had kids.

I kinda got my job by the balls and it's a place I can't see shutting down within the next hundred years, so I don't worry about too much. I care just enough to not get fired, srs.

Lmao. I am. We recently had a layoff too. Good pay for where I live and benefits are 100% paid for. Just had 4000 dollars of root canal and I paid 20 dollars. Stuff isn’t looki by good at my company and the workers are ungrateful union guys. They don’t show up or take the job serious. We recently got laid off and now we are back and they are doing the same stuff. They were letting us travel and even paying us 500 a week extra for travel and all of these low lives were stealing time and lying about hours so we just got banned from traveling. I want to do violent things because I get paid the least amount and this is over 1000 dollar pay cut for me now all because of low life losers

Not really, my position is pretty secure and not something that can be outsourced to foreigners (National Security).

Money and security concerns are normal and healthy to an extent, but for some individuals they take on a more “neurotic” bent.

It’s a fairly common problem, I’ve known several people with more or less the same issue, one of whom is my best friend.

Just try to remain aware of it and keep it in check.

I'm the OP and I feel like I'm in a somewhat (not 100%) similar situation - cyber security for a corpo,someof the data and access is required to be done by a USA citizen due to the regulations. But even my cyber team has a batch of new Indians or some other countries (with limited access) - and I'm sure that's in part due to budgets. Still get a little job loss anxiety some days.

The job loss worry was a BIG part of why I decided to choose my career. That and a pension/early retirement.

Its borderline impossible for you to get fired from the job I have. You gotta do a lot of fukd up stuff, and mess up multiple chances after you certify in order for something to happen to you.

We're basically recession proof, and I know a lot of miscer jobs aren't. The only potential negative is gonna be potential facility downgrades (means less $$ for some places) and the lack of certified controllers in my area. We aren't quite bad enough for mandatory 6 day work weeks, but we are far below our staffing numbers from what they were in 5-7 years ago.

I know a lot of miscers like to say they aren't worried about their jobs and they are gonna be fine ..... Y'all better prepare and never become stagnant in your corporate 9-5 jobs. Cause it will come back to bite you when you think everything is gonna be fine and suddenly you're on the chopping block cause someone else will do your job for $8 cheaper an hour

our sales center is down 34% this month. They could easily clean up the budget by letting go of the worthless tenure employees first.

No, I have enough experience to where I can find another one pretty easily. Especially since my industry isn't very saturated.

If all else fails Ill just become a tradie

I have a big chunk of savings to fall back on that helps me sleep at night, especially considering my work is inherently higher risk by being an independent consultant rather than an employee

Am pushing the risk tolerances in general right now tho, my mortgage payments per month are like $8k so there is no opportunity to let up
