The truth about Soccer vs Football. Europe is wrong, America is right.
The word "Soccer" was invented by ENGLAND!
Back in the 1800s, it was called ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. England had Rugby Football and Association Football. To differentiate between the two, they started calling it Association Football.... then we have newspapers of England calling it "Assoc Football", which was then shortened to "Assoc games" , then to "Assoc" and then finally "Soccer" .... it was a popular slang, back in those days, at Oxford and other influential English institutions, to add an "-er" at the end of words, like Rugby into Rugger..... "foot-er", etc...
When the sport was exported to the former colonies, like the USA, Australia, etc... it was called SOCCER! England themselves called it SOCCER at the time! Soccer meant Association Football, so you knew it apart from Rugby Football.
Since then, the word soccer fell out of use, and it was replaced by Football.
However, Americans, Australians, etc.. kept using the original word that ENGLAND INVENTED FOR THEIR OWN GAME!
So Americans are actually right. We are not renaming your sport. We're simply still calling it what you originally called it.

Soccer was the original name for it, a word invented by England themselves, and we're simply still using it.

its too late for USA to change it now, because we started our own american football and now we call that football
its really dumb for europeans to hate on americans when we use the word soccer, its not trying to be ameri-centric, its just the history of it from England, and its too late now
