Convince me that sumo deadlift isn't 100% cheating

- brb extremely shortened range of motion
- brb hugely superior mechanics for a lot of people
- brb a lot of conventional pullers dance around the subject when asked about it trying to hide their distaste for it
- brb doing sumo just looks really homosexual
- brb strongmen don't pull sumo

cheating in what sport? at some point heavy will be heavy and there's not much way to cheat to get more.

in the context of raw powerlifting

heavy will be heavy, but if you're using hacky chit to do it imo it doesnt count

imagine arching your back like a scared cat to achieve a 1 inch ROM on bench then trying to claim glory lol

Deadlifting is pretty much the most honest lift there is. You pick it up, then put it down. Do you pick up objects from the ground conventional?

As for convincing you that it isn't cheating; notice how the greatest deadlifts of all time are conventional?

i mean ultimately you're only competing against yourself...if the same form is used and you make improvement...no cheating.

I mean, depending on rules it is or it isn’t.

That is not opinion.

As far as exercising to get stronger, I would suggest there are more effective ways.

As far as being able to pick up something heavy with as little effort as possible, for whatever reason a person would want to do that, this would be the best choice.

Ego is the reason….

not a fair argument since in the highest level of strongman those guys aren't constrained to a weight class, but are constrained to a particular set of rules (ie no sumo)

at least to my knowledge

Yet you don't seem them hitting gym PR's in sumo. Everyone doesn't get a boost lifting sumo. I'm terrible with it personally.

Conventional deadlift is a cope lift which is mainly leverage based. How many times do you see a legit twink deadlift 500lbs for high reps. Sumo deadlift is the biggest cope lift out there, together they are both cope

You’ll never see a skinny twink OHPing 2 plates for reps or rowing 3 plates, those lifts are true tests of strength

strong man allows the use of straps and hitching

do you consider that cheating?

also strongman tend to have stronger lower backs just because of the nature of the sport. so they are probably naturally stronger conventional. they also can't take advantage of sumo because of their big frame. it's the twinks at lower weight classes generally that are able to spread their legs very far relative to how big they are and really shorten the range of motion. strongman can't really do that unless they get a wider bar.

Its clearly a different lift that should have its own category.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

yes.. cuz why train for an ego lift instead of training for the lift you'll actually be performing come comp time

Straps and hitching are fair game imo since those guys are pulling chit way way way beyond the normal human capacity. It's about using the tools allowed within that domain to pull the freakiest weight, and everyone in that domain uses said tools

sumo on the other hand is just exploiting some lame hacky mechanics to pull something you could never normally pull otherwise, posing a massive advantage over conventional pullers

Have you trained both ways? What are your thoughts on them from a personal perspective? Does your sumo put your conventional to shame?

my sumo is about equivalent to my conventional, and I rarely rarely pull sumo

If I dedicated more time to sumo and mastering its mechanics, I have no doubt my sumo pull would be roughly 50-100lbs more than my conventional

How would they redefine the rules to exclude sumo? what could it state: "feet may not be more than 6 inches apart", I doubt judges are going to measure your feet spacing before you pull the weight off the floor.
