Small Business Brahs.......tell me your experiences!

I'm thinking of starting a small side/weekend/evening business and want to hear your experiences/recommendations.

Just a little, local "yard reclamation" business. I don't want to cut peoples grass every week, I just want to target heavily overgrown, untrimmed, unkept yards, get them back to their glory and be out.

Maybe some pressure washing, minor landscaping/beds/mulch/pine straw, etc. That's it.

I've got all the equipment and experience. Made a flier, thinking of driving around, stuffing the flier in the mailbox and move on. TONS of houses in the area need it, just a matter of if the people care/want to pay for it.

I've thought about doing it this way. I've have YT Channel that I put some effort into about a year ago then sold the car I was making content with and kind of let it die off. Would definitely be some build up needed, but I have seen that those types of vids get tons of views. I guess there would be no REAL cost to do it for free on my part except my time/gas.

Would need some sort of waiver for people to sign I would assume.

That guy is genius. Imagine if he got a john deere sponsorship, or MOTUL or something LOL.

He legit doesn't need to do any regular customer work, just upload videos. I bet he makes between $1k-$5k per lawn he does from the millions of views he gets.

there will always be a market for lawncare. Most people don't want to deal with it.

Side hustles are easy today, but they still require up front work. I've been self-employed for fifteen years and have three businesses, most recent one started a few months ago.

Basically you're doing the right thing by creating a business for stuff people don't want to do themselves. It's why things like junk collection, cleaning and even personal training are successful. If you're just looking for your local area and a few customers, you can also use ******** for local community pages and places like Kijiji which are free for advertising.

Typical Misc.

I'm actually 37.

-Masters in Finance and currently work from home as a Controller (cost & scheduling) for a large, national commercial construction company making $116k/year in a very low cost of living area. I enjoy doing that type of stuff and I have all the equipment...basically no start up cost.

I also have a father who died 3 months ago and mother who lost her job and has absolutely no money so I've been supporting her for the last 3 months.
I also also just had a kid 2 months ago

I'm just looking for something easy that I can do 1 or 2 a week in the evening or on a Saturday morning to make an extra few hundred bucks cash a week.

Is it the BEST I can think of.....no. Is is something I can start doing NOW that involves no extra money....yes.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking, honestly the idea came about because I'm tired of driving by the 4 or 5 complete chit yards in the neighborhood on the way to my house.

Which is also why I'm thinking of doing it for "free" and make YT time-lapse vids. but am also thinking about having to deal with "those" type of people who might be hostile or get offended and pissed if some 6'6" ogre knocks on their door and insinuates their yard looks like dik and I want to clean it up.

I've thought about reaching out to a couple of my buddies in real-estate and try to work that angle.....get the yard all cleaned up for showings or pictures or before listing or keep it maintained while the house sits on the market.

Yeah if you really want to do landscaping you're better off doing commercial even if you have to hire a couple mexicans to help. Your truck and tools and start with a small apartment complex or rental agency. No complaints, no payment problems. But you might need to get bonded and insured.

I own a small business in a competitive market. It's successful and I grew it from 2000/month gross revenue to 70k+ gross revenue over the period of 4 years or so.

I had chit marketing, but in the right places.

Made it grow, customer by customer, month by month. Be that guy, your clients are happy to work with. Charsima, being a good person, and doing good efficient work goes a long way.

Also, if it's a business, you have to know what your competitors are doing.

IF your service is the same, then beat their prices a little. Be dependable, do a good job, etc.

Small things make a big difference in competitive markets like this. But mostly, just do it and keep going, if there is potential

All I gotta say is stay safe.

Depends how big you wanna make it. Is it just a part time hustle for when you got nothing better to do?

Are you trying to make it a full time gig?

Are you trying to hire people to do the work for you?

Are you trying to automate it so you can end up selling it?

Every step along the way is exponentially more and more shambolic.

You also don’t/won’t know what you’re getting yourself into. And I don’t mean that in a negative way. We gotta walk into it somewhat blindly in order to actually get things going. You’ll make tons of expensive mistakes.

Hopefully you become super passionate about the game of business itself, find advice, and listen to people who are further ahead than you. They can save you a lot of time and money (even if you have to pay for their advice).

Either way, good luck! I believe the shambles and effort are worth it.

You don't need to learn to do your own taxes (better to pay a good CPA). However, you do need to learn ********** and have all your records in order when you turn them over to your CPA quarterly. If you are going to have employees, use a payroll company.

If you don't learn to do your own taxes then whoever does your taxes is going to do a **** job. Always learn the tax code, it's one of the biggest expenditures for a small business. Many tax firms do not explain how things can be used and lending. I'm not going to type it all here but deductions and cost of goods will decrease your income for lending whereas depreciation is added back in.

I agree with payroll company once you get employees. I don't understand my payroll at all.

Landscaping is always good because the overgrowth is knarly and nobody wants to look at the s hit. Just find the owner and ask if he wants his grass cut and throw out a offer. Don't make too high and offer or you'll be turned away. Match the price with the area and level of detail needed. In lower rung areas people just need a quick cut and can do without the fine touches.

The guy who cuts grass and puts it on youtube is a pha ggot. Who watches grass cutting videos but obese people? Don't contribute to the dumbing of society, op. Get your ass out there and beautify your neighborhood and get paid for it.
