Body building is a behavior or pattern of actions. It is a verb.
When practiced at an extreme, it can be suggestive of underlying mental issues.
However, the act itself is not.

I've had the same thoughts...once it crosses from just staying healthy like joints/maintaining muscle mass to LOOKING different...drastic changes in diet, religious adherence to work out routine, supplements, etc -- THAT is when it becomes mental illness.

If you mean natty muscle building and health maxxxing them I would massively disagree. It has a host of benefits from social status, fertility, learning discipline, improved mental health via a boosted dopamine, denser bones, slower againg, preventions of a host of diseases and stay able bodied in the future, higher fertility, more sexually desirable, maxing out a beneficial hormone balance, upgrading sperm which improves the genome and genes of your offspring... list goes on.
If you mean the extremes of living your whole life within the bodybuilding drug and narcissism culture then yeah.
However that goes for any extreme. Just the bodybuilding culture causes alot of damage that you possibly can't recover from eg infertility, organ damage, destroyed hormone balance, poor descions made under the influence of drugs, induced eating disorders, the list goes on.

It's another male grindset. Similar to video games, guitar, golfing, etc. Men want something to work at and measure their mastery or improvement by.
So in that sense, bodybuilding isn't unique. But the two problems with it are
1. people usually start bodybuilding because they feel like chit about how they look. It tends to bring in high-neuroticism types from the word go. Lots of narcissists and dysmorphics.
2. once you try to continue the grindset past your natty limit, it gets dangerous to your health in a way that bowling doesn't.

Modern bodybuilding is now mostly a freak show or marketing campaign.
... still didn't say what it is though, just what you think its not but whatever.

I mainly do it because it makes me feel good. I get all of this nervous energy in me but after doing an extreme physical exercise I feel a lot better. I just get tired of all the people asking me why I workout or what I do at a gym

I'm in really bad shape right now and probably the fattest in my adult life, I can say a few things that looking like sh!t has going for it:
- I don't exist to most people, there's no attention drawn to me, nobody notices if I'm there or gone.
- I don't get teased or picked on, nobody targets me out of jealousy and tries to pick fights with me or troll me just for looking better than them.
- I get treated like I'm ancient, like I'm as old as I look (which is older than my age), and with a lot of respect.
Not sure why I had to point this all out.
But bodybuilding is not a mental illness, it just attracts retards and autistics.

Same with trying to fill that emptiness a person feels due to their looks by hoping on some kind of grueling fitness routine. Then they start comparing themselves to others within that realm and feel no better about themselves...I need bigger this or that or this...more toned...lose fat...developed this...eat 200g protein or feel depressed...miss a day in the gym depression...nobody is noticing my physique...depression...if only I grinded harder...I probably need roids...

why would anyone willing want to put their muscles/joints under tremendus strain (risking major injury) and do the exact same routines and eat the same bland food everyday like a prisoner?

I lift weights because I enjoy binge eating, drinking, and eating like ****.
And I used to lift weights because I was a d1 athlete.
But in either case, hardly would call that a mental illness.
Bytches love abs, I worked hard to achieve abs, I got lots of bytches.

if you told men back then that modern men would be strutting around gyms 4 days a week...often wearing spandex/tank tops/stringers...talking about "leg days" and "the pump"...often shaving their chest and arm pits...worried to death about meeting macros...
those 150 lb men back then with calluses from actual work would have thought men were destined to turn into fairy twinks
a shame men had to take on female characteristics...money to be made though
