What did people who were “born the wrong gender”

do before gender-affirming care existed, when getting a sex change or larping as the opposite gender wasn’t possible?

They were goth, or hippies, or stoners, etc. They clung on to whatever sub-culture that would accept them. There was no internet back in the day so it was slower to get weirdos to conform to the same type of weird.
