Step 1. Emulator.

2 of them, Yuzu and Ryujinx. Pick 1. Right now I think Yuzu plays it better.

Step 2. You need the Switch firmware. The current version is 16.02.

Firmware is console system OS. You usually want the latest version. Good luck finding this. The official emulator pages will only tell you how to copy it off your Switch but you need a hacked 1st generation Switch to do so. So you'll need to find it on the internet. A big hint here is oddly, to use YouTube and version and emulator searches to find both matching Firmwares and Decryption Keys usually found in secret Google Drive folders. Usually there's people that make videos.. they get taken down only to come back. Or a private Discord or Guilded channel. Guided is a more wild west version of Discord. The official emulator Discord will ban you if you even ask. The only reason these emulators can exist is without providing firmware or decryption keys. These are the property of Nintendo so you have to find them on your own.

Which brings me to....

Step 3. Decryption keys. The current version always matches matches firmware.. again 16.02.

You need to get a version of decryption keys that match the firmware or nothing works.

Copy and pasting from above because the same applies and keys versionneedsto match firmware:Step 4. Download the games you want. There are ROM sites like NSW2U. There are 2 file formats, NSP and XCI. I'm not sure if either is better. Also get any patches you want for the game. Usually games get patched for bugs or performance.


Step 5. Install the emulator of your choice, then follow the instructions on their website to install the keys and firmware for the emulator of your choice.

(Once again you should already have downloaded the keys and matching firmware, so ignore anything about dumping firmware or decryption keys, 90% of switch owners have no capability to do so.)

Step 6: create a folder for your Switch games and add that to the emulator library. Move your rom and game patches to that folder. Make sure you save and apply that and restart the emulator and the games should appear.

Step 7. Install patches to the game via emulator. I know ryujinx can do this not sure about Yuzu.

Step 8. Setup your controller of choice and configure it within the emulator.

Step 9: any game you launch will run like **** until shaders are fully created unless you find shaders for your game of choice and gpu. Initial shaders are not enough. I repeat, games will run like **** until the environments, the animations, new enemies, etc are created.

You're playing a 100 hour game, you're definitely going to have at least 2 hours of annoyance mostly at the beginning. As you've seen new areas, items, and animations the game will progressively get butter smooth. But every time there's a new enemy or area you'll experience some level of massive frame dropping until the shaders have been fully created.

Good luck finding proper pre created shaders for your games and gpu and emulator. I hear conflicting information as to whether downloading shaders is a good idea because emulator versions or something I'm not aware of breaks them sometimes. But they are around and installable if the thrashing is unacceptable to you.

Step 10: most current or even slightly older gpus should be able to run in 1440p or 4k no problem, however emulators are heavily cpu dependent. The more cores and ghz you have the better. Intel typically dominates AMD for emulator performance. I'm not a programmer I have no idea why. For gpu engine, typically Vulkan is faster, but when artifacts or issues occur, OpenGL is more reliable. I believe changing the gpu engine requires a restart after applying it, not sure.

Step 11: if you're using Ryujinx, add your emulator to Steam as a non Steam game, and start it from there so Steam takes over the joystick function, and if it times out wirelessly the emulator doesn't crash.

Step 12 (optional): download the other emulator and follow basically the same steps outlined above. Yuzu and ryujinx work differently so each game may work better or worse in each emulator.

For TOTK specifically, skip any 30 or 60 fps mods as they introduce progression bugs currently at least in ryujinx. For many games mods are fine and probably will be shortly for TOTK in both emulators but I can't predict the future.

I used real-debrid to download from a torrent cache so my ISP can't see that chit. I got the fitgirl Repack or whatever. Launches right up without worrying about some decryption key BS.

On my 3070, I am running it in 1440p and mostly stable 30fps. Some stutters here and there but that might have to do with the game being a pre-patched version.

No idea how to make it go 60fps.

Theres a 60 fps patch for yuzu you can get from gbatemp.

I recommend sticking with 30 fps as the 60 fps has bugs and for whatever reason has random drops.

Never heard of it. So you're saying real-debrid is a torrent client that masks your IP and lets you download torrents anyway? Or that whatever torrent cache you're talking about prevents seeing it? I haven't messed with torrents in a decade, I'm out of the loop but that sounds useful.

A testament to how impactful BOTW was I suppose

I had sort of a love hate thing going on with BOTW, it took me ages to get into it, I had to pick it up around 3 times, like forcing myself to persist, eventually it clicked and I had a great time, but once I finished I never really had an urge to play it again.

Totk though has so many more crazy sandbox elements, things to do, and grabs you right away, to the extent I do actually want to replay BOTW after I finish it, and kind of wish I did a replay before I started Totk.
