Misc mechanics: Evap code cleared itself without me doing anything?

-Check engine light came on a while ago
-I checked the code... P0456 (very minor evap leak)
-Got a new gas cap and cleared the code, but it came back a couple weeks ago
-Just today it went away on its own without me doing anything

Also, the check engine light still shows when the key is turned to "on" (but engine isn't started), so the light doesn't seem to be burned out.

Why would this happen?

Make sure you get an OEM gas cap. I got an aftermarket one and it was garbage.

Also I learned that gas caps can wear out.

I don't know how that would be possible tbh. After the CIL came on I made sure to fully tighten my gas cap after every fillup. I even replaced the gas cap with a brand new one and cleared the code, then a month later it came back. But suddenly it just turned off.

Trust me I know. But I live in a state that requires an retarded emissions test every 1.5 years. If you have any evap codes, you fail. It's dumb as sh!t.

This man is correct. The code is permanent so you can't clear it. If you do it just comes right back after a diag cycle. Only putting on enough miles and stop/starts with no further code trips will clear it.

Oh, I always forget about that. I have to redo my inspection every two years. For most of my adult life I lived in states that did not require them.

The local slobs around here that do it don't care, they still sign our chit off lol. Which I am grateful for of course.
