95yo great-grandmother in hospital after being tasered by police
95yo great-grandmother in hospital after being tasered by police at Cooma aged care home
A great-grandmother with dementia is fighting for life in hospital after being tasered by police at her nursing home in the NSW Snowy Mountains.
Clare Nowland, 95, was home in Yallambee Lodge in Cooma when staff called NSW Police to the facility on Wednesday.
Ms Nowland, who has lived at the aged care facility for more than five years, was believed to have been carrying a knife when officers tasered her.
She was taken to Cooma Base Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Ms Nowland is well-known in the local community, and on her 80th birthday she celebrated by skydiving over Canberra, as reported by the ABC.
The great-grandmother had previously volunteered at a charity store in Cooma, before suffering from dementia in recent years.
Her family are by her bedside in hospital and have declined to comment on the incident.
Yallambee Lodge in Cooma, which is run by the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, opened in 1995.
According to its website, Yallambee Lodge offers "palliative care" and can cater to residents with "higher needs".
In a statement, police said a critical incident team would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"That investigation will be subject to independent review," it read.
"No further details are available at this time."
In a statement, the Snowy Monaro Regional Council said staff, residents and family involved were being supported "during this difficult time".
"No further comment is available at the current time due to the ongoing investigation, and out of respect for the privacy of those involved."

Aussies. If any of their officers came to even our best town for a week they'd quit. This event probably was their worst crime all year so far!

It happened at 3am when staff were at a minimum. Facilities like this have issues when dementia patients walk into other rooms and argue with other residents about who belongs there. It can get pretty aggressive, from verbal shouting matches to actual physical scuffles. I saw it when my grandmother was in a facility like this.
Probably what happened is the woman walked into another room and a lone staff member saw the knife, and not risking it, called the police.
You may think "LOL, 95 year old woman" but the entire point of the danger of knives is that you don't need to be trained or even strong to cause serious damage with them. If someone is mentally ill and has a knife and isn't afraid to use it, you don't attempt an unarmed takedown. You tase the chit out of them or dump a clip in them.

Here's a fight that happened in Australia last year. A big dude rushes a smaller dude, smaller dude has a knife in his hand, just pokes him in the jugular:https://imgur.com/a/zr7ZM1U
10 seconds later....Boom. Dead.

I don't give a fuk who, how big, how old, how fast, don't care. All it takes is a small slash in the right place and you could lose the use of a hand forever. At the very least I'd use a baton and whack her on the wrist or something, probably wouldn't go full taser use. Still would end up being demonized on the media. But there's zero chance I'm trying to grab a knife out of someone's hand.LOL she's 95.

Obviously she wasn't an abo from the kurange-urkenigar lands, otherwise the police would've let her do whatever well she pleased.
