How Much or how little do you let people know about you ? (srs)

I was at work and one of the supervisors there was going on and on with another employee about their families and all their problems and I kept to myself. After awhile we got on the subject of why I dont like to disclose much. My response was that I come to work to work and I only let people know what I want them to know- I like privacy. I dont feel comfortable with doing things like putting personal information on social media (i use it for memes and jokes) or oversharing for attention.

They said that I need therapy because it shows I dont trust people . I personally feel like we live in a society of 'attention Olympics' where everyone has to compete to be heard or seen or approved of.

How do you go about disclosure like that? Am I wrong for keeping to myself at work or should I lighten up?

example : I'm eating lunch, this chick overshared she was frustrated that her husband who cheated on her 10 years ago is paying child support for the child he had back then. I'm thinking 'damn bro, i can see why you did what you did i dont even know you and I know all your business'. Gossip like that bothers me

That makes alot of sense. The person people cant gossip about really cant be controlled or understood to a degree. I keep all my personal information between me and the people I either see or call on the phone. I cant understand why people put their sick grandparents online or what they eat for dinner etc..its too much imo

Agreed.

The more you say the more ammunition they have against you when they want to stab you in the back.

Do you live in a western country OP? That sounds like chit I'd hear back in the States, srs. There's no reason to reveal your private life to strangers. Coworkers are not friends as far as I'm concerned. On the misc I'm more honest than I am in person with strangers. But that's also because I generally don't talk to people on the streets. Imagine just coming up to some rando and telling them your personal problems. It's really weird.

That’s white people stuff. Man I actually avoid white people at my job because they ask my 500 questions. What kind of name is that? Where is your family from? What all jobs do you do? Who is your wife? Why no wife! Why no kids? I tell everyone something different and then if I hear one of the lies out of another persons mouth I know who talks about me behind my back

this is exactly what it sounds like. They tried to pry into what i'm into so often that I was told 'im tough' . example - they wanted to put together a music playlist on spotify that everyone can play after everyone contributes their favorite songs or groups. I submitted several podcast because 'i only want to grow' (my response)

I dont know why mfers want to be in the mix of other peoples lives so badly. My favorite part of work is not being there and my second is not having to make small talk

Therapy is a racket. That being said, it's pure fantasy to think that you can hide or edit any aspect of your past. At best, you'll have a few years where you will be ignored or unseen. But that equilibrium can be violently overturned at any moment for the amusement of the rich. There's nothing you can do to hide, to remake yourself, or to put forth an image of yourself that you like. You seem to think that being sanguine about the realities of having your niqab ripped off at any moment is "the attention Olympics" but that's assuming arrogance on the part of those who dare to simply exist without shame. Maybe you are too young to have had your privacy deeply violated, but when it happens, just do your best.

I'm an open book, srs. Been this way since like age 17. In some ways I'd view it as a positive trait, I mean as mentioned in OP it's a sign of trusting people, but also it helps with coming across as genuine. Most people I've met at work are fairly open too, but you gotta respect those who keep to themselves more.

I think most of the coworkers I've known to be on the mysterious side were married and with kids, srs. It probably becomes a bit of a protective mechanism to add a layer of unknown. Probably feel less inclined to socialize when you're settled down and older. You can't really pick your coworkers, some might see you as an enemy or have some psycho vendetta against you for some reason.

No social media and at most I’ll go for a casual drink or play a round of golf with co-workers

Too much drama being involved/integrated at every given minute

I will generally share info to try to relate to people. I think that's what they are doing. It helps build trust and friendship to an extent. I have a hard time fully trusting people though.

At some point, if you never share anything about yourself, other people realize it's a kind of power play.

This whole 'we are a big family' thing irks me. I like to control what other people I would never be friends with know about me, even if they want to relate. I see your point those building trust and friendship to an extent is necessary but I think they come off as prying.

It's also about cooperation. There are levels of trust. You share some things with coworkers, others with friends, others with your spouse, others with parents, others with brothers, etc. If you treat a coworker like a total stranger, they won't be your ally when you need them. It's important to be diplomatic and to at least fake signal they are more than a stranger.

I generally withhold information, but there are obviously some people you can share a lot more with than others. In business I learned to be as tight lipped as possible about my personal dealings. Also, I have a friend who talks way too much and I can't trust to tell everything to because he's too much of an extrovert and doesn't shut the fuk up.

I usually travel for 2-3 months every year during Winter, because business is slow. But I realized some of my clients were beginning to resent me because of it, which I'm guessing other competitors of mine were getting in their head about how their guy in away for such a long time.

People dont want you to open up and tell them everything so they can get to know you on a personal level.

They want that information so they can use it against you in the future. Its what interrogators do in pow camps and the like. Get every tidbit of information and eventually exploit the person with it as best you can.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

You definitely don’t need therapy because you don’t share personal information with strangers.

I wish I was more like you tbh. I think I tend to overshare when asked personal questions and give away information that I regret later. I have a hard time not giving my opinion sometimes but I think I’ve gotten better at showing restraint.

I would NEVER discuss personal family/spouse problems with coworkers. That’s absolutely insane and embarrassing.

Just my closest friends would hear that stuff, and even that is risky.

You are absolutely right, the more people know about you, the more they look down on you or use it against you. Information is power.
