Is alcohol good for you?

Like a couple drinks once or twice a week.

I feel like enjoying alcohol, without over-doing it or doing it so often it starts harming your health, has got to have more of a net positive than negative.

Couple too-tree drinks is good for you, right? Assuming you aren't sacrificing your sleep for it or drinking weird sugary bich drinks.

Research suggests that having a few glasses of red wine a week is good for you (anti-aging properties, helps prevent Alzheimer's, plus positive effects of stress relief, etc.). I doubt that liquor or beer have any positive effects other than general stress relief that could improve mood and possibly prolong life in reasonably small amounts.

This is always conflicting and they rarely post the studies showing no benefit at all to drinking alcohol. It's not conclusive to say drinking a few glasses a week over rides any negatives to putting poison in your body (not that I'm an advocate for complete abstinence). If you're going to have a few servings of alcohol a week to relax, socialize, that's one thing. But don't do it for any health benefits (srs)

Wine is supposed to be healthy. Red wine is delicious. Jesus never drank himself. It was grape juice non alcoholic everything then with grape they referred to as wine even jam.

Beer is for sure. I drank heavily for like 30 years with basically no ill effects other than some belly fat.

Loved it too. I swear its good for the heart and liver and nothing can convince me otherwise.

Yeah, obviously don't drink it like it's some kind of medicine. However, it is delicious, extremely unlikely to have any negative effects in moderate amounts, and has shown some anti-cancer, anti-dementia effects, likely due in large part to antioxidants from grapes that end up in the wine and the effect of small amounts of alcohol on the brain.

All the benefits you get from red wine, you can get from other sources without ingesting alcohol. There is no benefit specifically to having alcoholic beverages.

case in point, there has long been an association between moderate wine consumption and lower blood pressure. If you look at the results, you see that many groups that were given wine actually had elevated blood pressure as a result, and a group of 60 untreated hypertension patients were given grape extracts instead and it resulted in significantly lower systolic and diastolic BP throughout the day.

Drinking red wine is not good for you. Having grapes is good for you, the alcohol is a neurotoxin and has no beneficial purpose.

People aren't made aware enough of the dangers of slipping from beer to liquor on a constant basis. Not that continuously drinking beer is good for you, but when you start using liquor because beer isn't effective enough/convenient enough/ or not realistic to attain because of the much higher amount of liquid you need to down, that is a very dark path. But in your case, if your body is ok handing beer health wise and it doesn't effect your personal life, by all mean, drink and enjoy (srs)

There appears to be some evidence that small amounts of alcohol can have effects on the brain which may delay/prevent dementia, and it may also improve heart health (but more research is likely needed). I'm not suggesting that people start consuming alcohol to unlock some medicinal benefits, but in small amounts like a few glasses of wine a week, alcohol is harmless at worst. You aren't damaging your brain or anything else at that level unless you have some serious health issue already. The "neurotoxin" thing is overblown if you aren't a relatively heavy drinker. Caffeine will also poison you in higher doses but has health benefits at more reasonable levels. You can also kill yourself by drinking too much water. It's just about finding the right balance depending on the substance.

I'd be interested to see the research showing alcohol preventing dementia. I would think the same logic holds true - the other ingredients in the alcoholic beverage are responsible for any positive affects. I can't imagine a neurotoxin would be beneficial in any way. Heavy drinking is associated with anincreasedrisk of dementia.

There was a study recently that examined 45 middle aged people (39 to 45) that all drank between low and moderate amounts (between 2 and 14 drinks weekly). Brain scans showed a reduction in total brain tissue, particularly the frontal lobe.

all of these studies about having a beer or glass of wine in the evening are funded by alcohol companies, even a single beer is garbage and poison

OK but it does matter if the company funding the research sells the product that the research is about. That is a conflict of interest.

I have no clue if that's true, just saying it matters.

Depends on if it's a case of paying a neutral third party to undertake a study and letting the chips fall where they may vs. setting up your own "institute" or some bullchit that just churns out stuff that supports your interests.

Confirmation bias is our tendency to cherry-pick information that confirms our existing beliefs or ideas. Confirmation bias explains why two people with opposing views on a topic can see the same evidence and come away feeling validated by it.

This is something companies know very well.
