Twitter withdraws from EU disinformation code

Failing to follow code could cost fines as much as 6% of annual revenue or even ban the platform altogether

Twitter exited the voluntary European Union’s Code of Practice on Disinformation, the bloc’s Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said.

“Twitter leaves EU voluntary Code of Practice against disinformation. But obligations remain,” Breton said on his Twitter account late on Friday. “You can run but you can’t hide.”

He said that beyond voluntary commitments, fighting disinformation will become a legal obligation as of Aug. 25 under the EU Digital Services Act.

Twitter will qualify as a “very large online platform,” requiring the company to address harmful content and submit annual risk assessments to the commission.

“Our teams will be ready for enforcement,” Breton tweeted.

This misinformation/disimformation campaign should scare everyone. It's just another angle of the authoritarian to control speech. It's what they do in oppressive states and if you were to ask a supporter of that regime they would tell you it's to prevent propaganda and terrorism along with misinformation and then they would argue that the people do have free speech. China does this. Iran does this. Cuba does this. Allowing the state/government to decide and control "free speech" you don't have free speech.
