I don't think condoms are 100% safe for hsv. The base of your johnson is exposed, and if the girl has an open outbreak on her genitals rubbing against your skin you can get it.

The best way to reduce incident is to inspect the vagina area prior to copulation. There are gynecological tools you can purchase on Amazon.

I usually put on gloves and get down their between their legs for a quick look to stay safe.

Herp only spreads when it's active. Genital herp (hsv2) and Oral herp (hsv1), despite their names, can appear at either the genitals or oral areas depending on where the infection happens. Genital herp is the worst one, as the breakouts are very active/frequent in comparison to oral herp.

If you know for sure that they have the worst one (genital / hsv2) it might be a disqualifier. If they have the milder one (oral / hsv1), then it's very possible it's not active when you have sex, and it's possible that after their initial infection breakout periods that they never have a breakout again for the rest of their life (or otherwise not for multiple years).

OP, odds are you've had sex with a girl with HSV a few times if you're sexually active and had no idea. Some people are also just carriers so they never get outbreaks but they still have it. I've never rolled the dice because to me it isn't worth it to have to disclose every time, and people who don't disclose who know they have it are scumbags. A female friend of mine got it from a guy who was having an active outbreak and didn't bother to tell her.
