Amazon Ring products are terrible and lack any security measures

LOL if you have any Ring products in your home.

https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc...laint_ring.pdf

"Not only could every Ring employee and Ukraine-based third-party contractor access every customer’s videos (all of which were stored unencrypted on Ring’s network), but they could also readily download any customer’s videos and then view, share, or disclose those videos at will"

"Although an engineer working on Ring’s floodlight camera might need access to some video data from outdoor devices, that engineer had unrestricted access to footage of the inside of customers’ bedrooms.”

“Several women lying in bed heard hackers curse at them,” and “several children were the objects of hackers’ racist slurs.”

The complaint details even nastier attacks – skip pages 13 and 14 to avoid references to incidents of a sexual nature.

46. And, in many instances, the bad actors were not just passively viewing customers’ sensitive video data. Rather, the bad actors took advantage of the camera’s two-way communication functionality to harass, threaten, and insult individuals—including elderly individuals and children—whose rooms were monitored by Ring cameras, and to set off alarms and change important device settings.

Examples of the harassment, slurs, and threats that consumers experienced include the following:

a. Several women lying in bed heard hackers curse at them;
b. Several children were the objects of hackers’ racist slurs;
c. A teenager was sexually propositioned;
d. An 87-year old woman in an assisted living facility was sexually propositioned and physically threatened; Case 1:23-cv-01549 Document 1 Filed 05/31/23 Page 14 of 2015
e. A hacker told an individual through her camera that the hacker had killed the individual’s mother and then directly threatened the individual: “Tonight you die”;
f. After a hacker taunted one child in the bedroom she shared with her siblings, the child developed a strong fear of her bedroom and required therapy and physical changes to her room to help her overcome her fear;
g. One hacker threatened a family with physical harm if they did not pay a ransom in Bitcoin;
and h. A hacker told a woman that her location was being tracked and that her device would self-destruct at the end of his countdown; she disconnected the device before his countdown ended.

Why I don’t have ANY cameras inside a house that have WiFi connections. There’s no reason.

Baby monitor? No model with wifi ever.

Exterior? Don’t really care, goodluck watching nothing, google maps gives you all the same overview for layout.

JFL @ trusting Amazon with what they're doing with your data on top of all this. Same goes for Google. You can bet they're harvesting data off of it.

Any surveillance camera I have is hard wired and air gapped.

Of course they are harvesting data but at least secure these devices from the outside world.

I had to remove my doorbell this week after using it for half a decade. It malfunctioned and would not stop ringing. But I guess electronics that get constant California sun all year long are destined to fall apart.

Fuk ring, can't even record video without a subscription. I've got some blink cameras that work well and store all data on my private server. No subscription cost.

I don't want them having that data. Fuk Amazon. Fuk Google.
I refuse to have any of these "smart" devices in my home.

I have Blink doorbell and cameras at my Mom's house outside only with that usb storage unit and a blink doorbell at my house.
far as i know without the the cloud service everything stays local.

ring is cloud only and anyone can get access to that.
including police just by asking.

and if blink can see an 81 yr old woman yell at raccoons on her front porch or my mailman...ok.
enjoy.
I guess.

You mean the company that ships knockoff oakleys directly from CHYNA has quality control issues with their ring products?

I'm shocked!
