I work as a finance manager and deal heavily with accounting....
I can tell you that the #1 skill you need in finance is actually salesmanship. And when I say salesmanship, I mean you have to be able to "sell" bullsh/t, poorly estimated numbers to the C-Level executives. Most of accounting is based on estimates.
The 2nd most important skill to have is the willingness to work sloppily and slowly... Yes, you heard me right, the slower you work, the better you'll be. Because if you get things done too quickly or efficiently, they'll just give you more work to do - and overload is inevitable in this field.
Recap:
1) Adopt the mindset of sneaky used car salesman
2) Work slowly and inefficiently
3) Never answer emails right away, only answer it after the 3rd time they've sent the same email. This kinda correlates with #2
4) Always deflect to someone else, never be the first to answer questions.
5) When asked to set targets or goals, always set goals that are super easy to achieve.
6) Limit how much you interact with coworkers

Finance can be lucrative if you know how to play the game right... and to play the game right, refer to my post above.

But I burned the fukk out and never made partner because I couldn’t take it anymore. Now I am doomed to a life of having a middling career. Meanwhile, the mediocre joes from my firm that kept a low profile and followed your advice above l, they didn’t burn out and they are making partner.

It's not about kissing as5, it's about what I call "offering access"... "Access" means having connections to other powerful business people. For example, an executive isn't necessarily hired because he's smart, he's hired because he can provide "access" to other powerful execs at other corporations because they all mingle with each other through country clubs and charity galas...
And the reason why Ivy League alumni are so covetted by companies isn't because they're smart, it's because they made connections to other powerful alumni who probably come from "old money" families.....
The Execs actually view as5 kissers with contempt, because as5 kissers are the equivalent of social media clout chasers - they want to leech off of someone else's clout while not offering anything of value in return.....
