Why would anyone making minimum wage want to try and stop them anyways lol, that's the stores problem to figure out I wouldn't get shanked for $10/hour.

It's because people take things personally when someone shoplifts while they're working. I worked overnight at a 24 hour convenient store for 6 months, and even though I made minimum wage, you'll instinctively stop someone walking out with items right in front of you. Looking back it was fuking stupid as you can get killed making 15 dollars an hour

Yeah it's stupid for sure, at least with this law you can just not even worry about it, let the companies figure it out they'll care more when things start flying off the shelves and no one cares.

This will hurt the mom and pops shops badly. A local Shoe place got robbed they are independent and sell skate shoes and clothing etc and some blacks wearing skinny jeans robbed them of thousands of stuff.

The big corps wont really suffer they have cushion.

But the majority of the robbers are black and then some latinos, but mostly blacks.

This is why so many black are doing crimes because liberals are scared to call them out on it and discipline and shame them instead they just blame the white man and then dont punish them for crimes. Almost all these DAs are funded by S9ros too.

Yes. It's very anti-small business.

Might not be able to allow shoppers into areas of the store with merchandise.

fewer retailers > less employment

more stolen goods being resold > less demand for legally purchased goods

more product lost to theft > higher prices at retailers to try to cover the losses

You guys gotta read man. This isn’t a “let black people steal bc white guilt” thing. They don’t want companies forcing employees to confront shooters and violent thieves bc the liability rep damage is terrible.

Would you rather be shoplifted from or have the bad reputation of your store being the store where an employee got killed trying to stop a shoplifter?

I'm not aware of any retailers forcing employees to confront thieves or shooters. Hard to imagine that being in the standard job description. It's been a minute since I worked retail, but regular employees were at most supposed to approach and chat up shoppers that seemed shady to let them know they were being watched.

Unless you are hired to be store security which seems to be what the retailer's association is miffed about-
The bill has been met with opposition from a variety of groups, including the California Retailers Association (CRA).

“This bill goes way too far, number one, where I think it will open the doors even wider for people to come in and steal from our stores,” said Rachel Michelin, CRA president and CEO, in a report by Fox KTVU.com.

The California Chamber of Commerce also expressed reservations about the bill.

“California’s employers—both public and private—should be very concerned about SB 553 because it requires all employers to meet workplace violence standards that exceed even those applied to hospitals under present regulations,” the organization’s policy advocate Rob Moutri said in a statement reported by Yahoo News.
So it sounds like the police won't do anything about thefts under $1,000 and the stores won't be allowed to have their own private security either.

ETA: the $1,000 limit is kind of comical given that professional groups will hit a store en masse with multiple masked thieves each hauling out a chunk of merchandise.

And it does create a little bigger problem for larger retailers than you may first think. Someone pointed out in a comment section a couple of days back that most large retailers have an automated inventory system in place which dispatched products to stores when previously shipped products have been sold.

If no sale takes place then the item won't be replenished and will just be out of stock indefinitely meaning an unknown number of lost sales when shoppers can't find items on the shelf.
