My problem with Starfield
Even though I don't game much anymore, I've always been a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls but Starfield just doesn't excite me.
I think the problem is that the game has no personality. The world is so bland, I don't look at it and think "I want to know what it's like to be there." It's almost like a space themed Second Life in terms of style and tone. Remember how much lore Mass Effect packed, with the various alien cultures, the ancient technologies (relays, the citadel), its own style, etc? You wanted to check it all out, to escape into that world. Also, an RPG normally has some interesting factions and NPC's for you to mess with. None of that has been shown for Starfield. Even the NPCs seem so fukking dull that you don't care about getting to know any of them.
Add to that the fact that there is really no hook here. Take Mass Effect again, since it's another space game. The reapers coming to destroy the galaxy for some mysterious reason was a EPIC hook. You wanted to know who the protheans were, how it happened in the past, why it's happening again, who the reapers are, how you will stop them, etc. Here, it's like "Go build your ship or something." Starfield feels like a collection of all these mechanics and things you can do without an exciting reason to do it. I'm busy enough in the real world.
EDIT, btw, how generic is that fukking soundtrack? If anyone needed proof that they need to bring Jeremy Soule back, just listen to the trailer. I got sick of that fukking "grand" theme in 3 mins. Compare this to Mass Effect music or to TES soundtracks.

Agree with everything here. It was my major disappointment in the deep dive. They showed off all the systems and the 1000 generic worlds you can explore. And the weapons and shops you can own and customize. It felt like they were promoting more of a space sim where you can just role play as a guy living in the future and can travel to planets n chit.
And that's cool but Mass Effect was one of my best experiences in gaming, if not my best. And while you got to explore space a bit and take in cool alien worlds, the best part was the story and the lore behind it. They dumped so much cool lore behind all the species and factions, and made you understand right from the beginning the volatile balance they had with one another. Then the plot begins right from the start that threatens that balance so you feel a strong sense of urgency not only to prevent the threat but to keep the peace among the races. And beyond that, they really went out of their way to make the allies you meet all unique with their own problems and motivations where you can decide to help them or not, creating some really strong moments that flesh out your character and theirs.
I looked at that Starfield video and saw none of that. I'd like to go in the game and fuk around a bit but I don't feel drawn in on compelled by anything that tells me it has a strong sense of direction or purpose.

So just play mass effect again
Starfield looks like it's going to be one of the most well rounded games out there in terms of actual gameplay and things to do. Looks more ambitious than any other game currently being previewed on any platform. I'm hyped to see new chit coming out instead of remasters and remakes.

So you don't like Starfield because you don't know enough about it and you don't think it will be better than the best space RPG ever made?
Not knowing enough used to be why we bought games. I bought Mass Effect 1 on the Xbox 360 based on the box art alone, knowing nothing about the game. That's how i discovered most of the games that ended up being my favorite games ever.
I would simply say that if you don't think it's for you, don't buy it, but not knowing enough about the game doesn't feel like a great reason.

Starfield legit looks like the kinda game that a bunch of autistic albeit incredibly talented coders would churn out.

Yeah I have to agree with OP. Plus the lack of plot/storyline is very unsettling. Space exploration is cool but I need story and a plot. That is why I can't wait for Spiderman 21 because the the plot and storyline is so good. Also I can't wait for the last of us 2 8k remastered remake that is gonna go on sale for $90. It'll be totally worth it because it'll come with a sticker book. In my opinion the last of us 2 has one of the best plot and storyline of any game!!!
Fk the Good Poster Crew (Lockdev, Pink, Kimm, Wasps, Expatriot, Mulloway, Luc1fer, Smallpeter, gwg, Super Hercules, Bonobo, maori-rap, Based Bagel, ezmac31, Goobaa, Godfrd and many more). You know who you are.

When someone asks what makes a great game, aren't the first two things mentioned always gameplay and story?

What he said was factual. They didn't show the plot of the game. Op isn't happy about that, that's also a fact and it's a fair one because every AAA game should have a good plot.
If you want to disagree with op here, then the only good faith argument is to show that there was a story or maybe give a reason as to why Bethesda didn't think to include that in their presentation.

It's a 100+hour game. Kind of hard to show plot in a 15-minute segment.

Plots can be shown in a 1 minute segment, we don't need 15+ minutes. Just tell us what's the overall idea of the story. They did a whole ass presentation for the game and omitted that one really important aspect. That can't be a coincidence and I'm concerned it would just be a soulless space exploration simulator without a strong reason to get you hooked or care about the characters and the world.

One of the first things they do is talk about Constellation, their role, and how you interact with them for the story.
I'm not exactly sure where you are getting the idea it won't be story centric. That's what every Bethesda game is minus ESO and 76, which still have dozens of hours of story. They may have forgotten to remind people of that, but that is what the game will be.
There are building and landscape aspects that are new and that's what they are showcasing. It is a role playing game. Giving you more options to build out who you are and what you do and what you do it in is part of the experience.

Honestly I've felt that way about most games these days, that's probably my major complaint. lore and immersiveness have fallen off. Even with games that have a ton of filler lore/notes/whatever, I just get the vibe that it was a bunch of junk typed up as quickly as possible in a couple of days. That's even worse, since now I've got a bunch of half-hearted crap to sort through that's not even worth paying attention to.
Like some of the good games, it's like they had a story to tell and crafted a game around that story, vs some of the current crap where they're like "hey what about skyrim in space" and then make up a bunch of crap to fill in the gaps.

Don't have heroes; look up to no one. Because as long as someone's leading the way, the best you'll ever be is second.

I'll reserve judgment and see how things go once it has been out for a little bit. I got the sense early on from the teasers that the plot was supposed to be sort of a mystery that unfolds for the player as you go (sort of '2001: A Space Odyssey' vibe, perhaps). If that's the case, it doesn't shock me that they are light on plot info at this stage so that everything is a surprise other than gameplay/visuals.

Second, having concerns about a game does not mean I don't like it. I like this type of games (elder scrolls) and I do want it to be good but the things I mentioned are giving me pause.
Your point about me simply not knowing enough is not a strong one. The game is coming out in 3 months. I should know a good amount of these very important details. The fact that I don't is making me think that there isn't much to tell. I mean, when did Bethesda ever downplay something about their games?
Your related point about me not knowing enough because of the size of the game is ridiculous. Skyrim was a 1000 hour game (for me) and the hook was introduced in the very first trailer. Bethesda pretty much immediately started talking about it being the land of the nords and what the dragons meant and what's at stake. But after several trailers and a showcase for Starfield, hardly any time has been given to discuss any cool lore elements or any solid details that would have us excited about the main hook of the story. This, given the game's very grounded visual style, is concerning.

What's the problem OP? you land on a brand new planet that's been completely unexplored ... You step out and your quest hud updates " Find your Father's last known location here"
After Skyrim, F04 I've given up on Bethesda actually focusing on story / factions/ systems / choice / consequence. All they care about is building elements now ... Ship building, base building and all that noise.
If you actually want a proper RPG with good choices / consequences and plenty of systems. Larian and perhaps Obsidian / Inxile are the dev's to go to for that.

what put me off was the entire scope of it all with their "1,000 planets"
sounds like a gigantic timesink just for the sake of having "1,000 planets" while like 950+ of those are probably just to gather some resources and chit
like the probing planets in ME2, but in SF you'll probably be able to land on them lol
I'm seriously fed up with games that feel like they need to deliver 300+ hours of content, if you can tell a story in 50 hours that's fine no need to add stuff just for the sake of it
a game with 300+ hours of ACTUAL content is rare lol
so I decided it's not a game for me, still hope it turns out great for those that actually like that kind of stuff

like the probing planets in ME2, but in SF you'll probably be able to land on them lol
I'm seriously fed up with games that feel like they need to deliver 300+ hours of content, if you can tell a story in 50 hours that's fine no need to add stuff just for the sake of it
a game with 300+ hours of ACTUAL content is rare lol

Making a game huge isn't a good thing if the vast expanse is like being in purgatory.what put me off was the entire scope of it all with their "1,000 planets"

I still think there is a very insular perspective here. The universe is a lot of barren and empty space. It's kind of the point for it to look like a barren expanse at times. What you're calling a shortfall is what I'd call a huge upshot of the incredible freedom at play here.
Why No Man's Sky flopped is because it wasallbarren and relied too much on procedural generation when the AI tech wasn't really advanced enough to carry a game with. Bethseda aren't doing this; they're making story, factions, rich civilizations, plot arcs, character development and trying to strike the best balance between that and procedurally generated content.
It's as barren as you make it, and that's the appeal. If you want to explore uncharted planets, you can. Or you can hang around massive cities.
Back off, Warchild.
Seriously.
