Prices the auto shop quoted me for all the work they "recommended" yesterday...
Made a topic yesterday asking for mechanic advice because the shop I took it to for new tires and an oil change "recommended" a TON of work be done. Got the quotes for everything when I picked up the car. Car is a 2004 Toyota Matrix. I didn't have any of this done.

All of that work requires minimal tools and experience. You can do everything other than the shocks/springs/brakes yourself today. Springs and brakes need some specialized tools, but they aren't expensive, and you may be able to rent them from AutoZone.

Alot of that is pretty simple superficial stuff you could take a day and knock out. Cabin filters and headlight restoration and what not.
Idk I wouldn't really do chit either, that car must be nearing the end of its life cycle, but if it's not and you want to make it a 400k car, then you might want to start doing some of that maintenance they recommend.
I'm sure at 205k and still on your original suspension.. Yeah I'm sure your suspension is probably shot, your probably used to it by now but I imagine your ride quality is ass.

Next oil change (4-5k miles) I'm gonna take it to a different shop/mechanic and ask for a tune-up, and ask about some of this stuff as well. I had a trustworthy mechanic before I moved 30 minutes down the road and he never mentioned any of this stuff. And another mechanic after him didn't mention this stuff either. So that makes me think that this shop was trying to milk my wallet.
The ride is rough-ish, but I am used to it. I really don't car if the ride is rough as long as it's not going to cause the car to break down.

Fuk a shop and dealerships.
Got quoted $7k to fix my truck that I bought "wrecked" in 2020. Last guy rear ended another truck, front bumper was pushed down (needed 2 new mounts, no frame damage) and the grill was cracked, need 1 headlight and the thin front trim piece that goes above the bumper. Bought all the parts and fixed myself with a sledgehammer & ratchets...took about 4 hours for $1700. Looks like new.

If these prices include labour AND parts then I think they're good, tbh. Obviously if you can do them yourself then that's cheaper.
I guess the only critical thing is the tensioner, unless they're recommending it based on service schedule?

Items 6-11 & 13 need to be performed; otherwise your vehicle not only is going to run horribly(if at all) but you'll be a hazard to yourself & everyone else on the road
The realitea is you bought a 200K mileage vehicle that has had effectively zero prior maintenance service(s) performed; it's a piece of junk & probably full of sludge because people are stupid and think you should go 5K+ miles between oil changes
Every vehicle's owners manual clearly states the minimum time-frames to have all of those services performed but no one ever even opens it
Lol'd hard @ 200K timing chain/tensioner(s); good night sweet prince
Edit: Get those end links replaced too if you enjoy being able to steer your vehicle

I replaced the tranny pan gasket on my 02 a month back.
gasket and filter were like $30.
it did take me a few hrs, but only because there were like 15 bolts holding the pan on and the filter in there broke while i was trying to get it out.
they wanted 700 to do my buddies brakes. rotors and pads.
i told him to buy the parts and bring it over.
took me a few hrs on the stone driveway. fuking with the magnet parking brake slowed me down a bit.

I understand hating on shops that recommend extra BS but I've worked around cars my whole life it was my first job in HS was in a mom and pop shop.
I'll give em credit they provided proof that they're not lying about the work recommended, those end links are toast and you can replace them yourself fairly easily.
The timing chain repair I would at least consider if it was me.
Shocked a fog light goes for 350 bucks that must be an OEM price but thats wild if thats an aftermarket price

LMFAO your shocks and struts are probably perfectly fine. They tried to get you on everything FFS. Glad I have a tiny local shop that knows me by name and never tries to get me to do anything besides what I asked for SRS. Just got my AC fixed for a great price and they even ziptied some sht in my bumper that 2 obliterated raccoons knocked loose heh

The quotes are valid but if it was my car Iโd let it leak, oil is cheap and there is a limit to how much the pan gasket would leak, it wonโt be catastrophic like ignoring the chain tensioner (and guides), ask me how I know lol
