WFH crew: How much money do you save working from home?

Applied at a WFH position but I'll make about $7K less per year. Approx 10% paycut considering I work 40hrs a week for them. Currently 1hr+/58mi commute to work each way and I usually work 50+hrs a week.

Once I was at Riverfest.

Three day live music festival in Little Rock with like five stages etc.

good time.

B.O.B. playing.

I was a little self conscious despite being easily top 5% of aesthetics there, my friend convinced to me to take my shirt off.

Obviously women just eye ****ed me all day. Pretty standard stuff for any gym rat in an environment where it isn’t weird to show off being a gym rat and most people there have never seen a gym…..

I am 5’7”.

Me and my friend who is around my height, and DYEL status started making our way to the front of the crowd to be in front of the stage.

I guess people don’t like it when you do this.

Like, even though they could just push their way up front, they don’t, and they yell at other people who do.

This is in a grass field. There is no reserved seating or anything.

Some drunk dude started yelling at my buddy. He was pissed. At least 6 feet. You could feel with his body language he was legit mad. He started yelling at my friend hard af.

It took me a second to realize he wouldn’t even look at me going off on this rant. Once I saw the weakness, I slowly walked up to him, put my open palm in front of his face, inches away, and closed my fingers as a type of command for him to shut his mouth.

He literally did not even acknowledge me.

His wife/gf looked at me and started begging me to just leave it.

Even though I was all up in space he was not engaging me, only my friend.

He was not a threat at all.

This same thing happens to much smaller degree two or three more times. People just getting passive aggressively mad, but letting us through.

As people do be, most were cool.

So when we got to the front we made some friends and they were saying how they pretty much had to fight their way up there. I didn’t even think about that one guy because most people were cool about it, and I told him I didn’t have that hard of a time.

“Look at you man, of course you didn’t”

It is a different world man.

~180 lbs, 10-13% bf, 17.5 inch arms perfect proportions.

zero fighting ability and way more confidence than I should have.

at the same time though, insecure pussies (alfas), are threatened by your mere existence and like to start chit. So you have to deal with that.

Save 1 hour each way on train
Extra 1.5-2 hours sleep in mornings
Log off at 5 and already home
No need to pay for train (or petrol/parking of driving)
$15 for a sandwich in the city

Still can’t be bothered working

Edit: Updated the wrong post.

Just wanted to make an update post: Probably one of the few cases where the Misc gave good advise.

So I took the job. My old job wasn't happy i was leaving but this job is hard to get. They tried offering a significant raise however, it was just putting me where I was pre-inflation so to me it wasn't really a raise at all. New job, being paid every week but it honestly only comes out to about $50 less per week than what I was making before. Considering I'm only working 40hrs a week instead of 50+ I'm making more per hour. It's odd, when you are used to going to work every day, since you were a teenager, I felt unemployed and it was kind of depressing. Cool thing being able to roll out of bed at 7:59 and be at work at 8:00am. Plus I'm no longer a tradie lol. I'm saving so much gas and wear and tear on my vehicles. Eithe rway, I've got a raise overall.

My first couple weeks, I really thought i dun goofed hard. I have stepped way over and they are going to figure it out and can me. I used to call these guys when I needed help, and now I'm supposed to be one of them? Farrrrkkkkkk..... I'm doing training via zoom with a trainer and just feeling as lost as Biden at a town hall. Anyways, now starting to hang on but it looks like Indiana Jones on the side of a cliff. I'm working with people that are a lot smarter than I am and I feel like a retard. I hope they keep me because I'm starting to notice that I've probably found one of those good jobs and I'm more or less entry level here and it can lead to much bigger and better things. This is a real STEM job and I don't have a degree. Most mechanics just work until they can't. I don't want to go out like that.

All I have to say is if you have goals and see an opening go for it. Ambition/drive/motivation is huge. Even if you fail, at least you learned something. In a world of Chevrons and BP's, be a Buc-cee's srs. I say this because I honestly wish I had drive and some confidence when I was younger.

Thanks misc. (I tried to rep everyone I could but some I have already repped other places)

When I was 100% on-site i'd spend about $120/month on gas alone, then there's the days where I forget to bring a lunch so thats easily an additional $10-$15 for the day as well. Then there's the general wear and tear of the car (burning oil/wearing down tires)

being WFH for a couple of years would give you the equivalent of an extra $5 per hour easily.

I spend like $30 a month on fuel, and most of that is for my lawnmower.

I probably don’t save that much money but commute time is significant

When you factor in getting a kid ready, getting suited up etc it’s at least an hour a day which makes a massive difference to everything

Also if you have a kid and they get sick or some bs and need to be brought home from daycare, if you were in the office that might write off your entire day but if you’re at home it’s a minor inconvenience

I've done both.

Subway cost me 6.50 per day.

Lunch is kind of a wash since I usually don't cook for lunch. Various energy drinks and other caffeine. $5-10 a day.

So maybe $10-20 extra a day if I'm in the office.

alot

here in Cali at least $60-70 on gas per week assuming you commute 30 mile round trip.

then more on eating out at lunch

you also get more sleep

more energy

save on maintenance (oil changes, brake pads, tire rotations) all of this over time of course.

I’d take a $7k paycut to shave 10 hours off of my work time per week, and another 10+ hours off by not commuting.

That’s 20+ hours a week of your life. Basically amounts to $6.73 per hour of those 20 hours. I’m sure having that free time is worth more than that for you.

I’ve been full time remote since 2017. In that time I’ve put like 30k miles on my car. I also wear great food at home, have more meaningful breaks by hanging out with my wife or pup, and am off exactly at 4pm. WFH is the only way I’ll ever work going forward, and you should have the same attitude towards it.

Will never understand this.

WFH can be "lonely" but the alternative is wasting 45 minutes (minumum in a commute) to have to deal with:

-Kulvinder who stinks up the break room with her curry

-Jeff the 44 year old who is 100lbs overweight and would wear a sports jersey to work if he could get away with it, tries to act 20 years younger than he really is and talks about "Fantasy Football" 24/7

-Micromanaging Michelle who's just a secretary but acts as an office "cop" narcing on people for being on their phone.

-Then there's Anita the 68 year old that should have retired years ago. She has nothing to talk about except how she's sick all the time and what surgeries she has coming up who calls on your every 45 minutes becasue she doesn't know how to un-jam the printer, or doesn't know how to save a Word document as a PDF.

No thanks, I'll take loneliness over ^^^^^^ any day.

I have a 3 minute commute. It's infinitely better than my 20 minute commute before I moved. I doubt I'm saving any money because everything is more expensive in the middle of the city as opposed to 20 min away.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

All of my daily obligations are within a 10 minute bike ride from my house. Don't even need to drive if weather is good.

Even though I live close to the office, WFH saves me probably 1 hour of daily prep and 30 minutes total commute time, so 90 minutes per day. The 30 mins driving would be probably $5 in gas per day. It's kinda negligible for the gas cost saved, but 90 minutes per day is far from negligible in my eyes.

I save 3 hours (getting ready, driving), $50 a week in gas, $500 a year for clothing, $500 a year for dry cleaning, $200 a month in food, and probably some other things I am not thinking of.
