There are certain phenotypes that create round faces. Basically it’s a result of individuals with brachycephalic skulls who also have genetically higher facial fat storages and weak jaws/chins. It creates a round or heart shaped face.

European phenotypes that often have this look is the West Alpinid, Alpine Med and Subnordid phenotype, in the Middle East it’s East Alpinid, in India it’s the Indo Brachid phenotype which is the most common phenotype there, in Amerindians there are many round face types but one of the more common ones is called Istimid, in Asia there is a bunch.

So there are people who get round appearing faces from having high body fat..but the people with the short skulls, weak chins and jaws, and genetic predisposition to gain fat on the face are going to be the people who are going to have legitimate round faces or heart shaped faces regardless.

The best thing men with these face shapes can do is grow beards/goatees/van dykes to make their face appear long and lose weight to try to slim cheeks. Leonardo DiCaprio has a round/heart shaped face and he is able to disguise it better when he grows facial hair.

There is a lot of variation between human skull shapes even within the same races.

Humans can be brachycephalic, mesocephalic and dolichocephalic. These influence the face shape because it’s the shape of the skull, beyond that certain people are going to have differing levels of facial fat storages naturally and different development of bone in the brow, chin, jaw, cheekbones etc which further influence the face shape. For example a round face person is more likely going to be brachycephalic but so is a square faced person, the difference is the square faced person is going to have much more developed jaw, chin, and cheekbones.

Women can get away with having round faces more easily, in fact some guys like women with full and round faces (personally it’s not my cup of tea) but men with round faces are at a disadvantage. It’s definitely the least desirable face shape for a man to have.
