I prefer to be in an area of people with higher incomes. A recent visit to Austin reminded me of this- how much nicer the parks and stores are, that people appear to be fitter and our more polite.

Yes. And I lived through the 70s though I was only a child. There was still real discrimination going on and open hatred/lack of tolerance for out groups. But there was also a lot more social cohesion and human to human contact.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't Austin basically a liberal chithole now? Their downtown is so small too, I don't see the appeal of living there.

I think it is mostly all technology related. Not like we didn't have housing/food/clothes. We didn't have as many toys and distractions.
The politics have always leaned more liberal in Austin. There may be more crime than previously...I've seen some posts about 6th Street. The homeless wee reined in and cleaned up a lot.

I think in most big cities there are enclaves/'burbs where the wealthy choose to live and shop and they are usually safer and much more pleasant.
Yes, most people had some sort of air conditioning, at least in the hot climate I live in. Poorer people might have window units instead of central air. All the cars were less safe by today's standard and most people didn't really care about seat belts/car seats. I don't remember anyone not having a refrigerator. And health care was less insanely expensive than it is today by a good margin.

I've been thinking about this for awhile. I'm old enough to remember when you could go to the grocery store and pick things up without having to call someone to come unlock the case. When you used to be able to return a pair of defective jeans (ripped/split too fcking easily) without giving them your driver's license info (this happened to me) and so on. I even recall people I grew up with saying they could return a movie and get a refund if they didn't like it. Music stores won't let you return books because they assume you bought the book and made photocopies of all the pages. Whew lad.

It all speaks to a decay of society and if culture. A lot of trashbags had to come along and ruin life for the rest of us.

so do people really live longer now? the perception of time moves a lot slower when you aren't constantly distracted. living 70 years in the 70s is probably equivalent to 90+ years of today's time.
