My wife told our son something today, and it kinda pissed me off.

We were sitting in traffic next to an overpass and a bum came up to the truck In front of us and accepted some cash from the driver.

My wife instantly turned to our 8 year old in the back seat and said “DO YOU SEE THAT ****?” “LISTEN TO ME SON. DONT YOU EVER GIVE MONEY TO BUMS.” “A grown man is supposed to be able to provide for himself, and if he can’t get a job and work for what he wants, then he doesn’t deserve to eat.”

Knowing my wife, I don’t think she actually meant it THAT literally. Especially the “eating” part. But I looked at her dumbfounded but didn’t actually call her out on it in front of our son; even though he knew better than to believe that himself. He argued that he thinks everyone should be able to eat. To Which I agree, but I understand the greater message she was poorly trying to convey. Which is don’t give bums money.

IMO it’s a 99.99999% chance that the money will go to drugs, alcohol or gambling. I’m just not sure if I should talk to her about how she worded it, or at least talk to our son about the not deserving to eat part.

It's sad. They deserve to live and eat of course, but change comes from within and they have to be willing to change.

I think it's hard when mental health and addiction issues come into play though.

I saw a few homeless people in miami and they were like zombies on Fet or something. And some had no arms or legs too, just passed out asleep in the sun. It was sad.

Homeless people in london are way more animated and polite for the most part.

It’s true. Fully grown adults should take responsibility for themselves and be held accountable for their actions. IDGAF if “muh addiction”. I enjoy Pepsi on a fairly regular basis, but I still make sure all my responsibilities are taken care of. Got a fat Q of pure ready to go for tonight baby.

Forget talking about it, actions speak louder than words.

If you’re ever out with your son and you get approached by a homeless guy asking for money (because they want to get some food), take the opportunity to say to the homeless guy “look, I’m not gonna give you money, but I’ll buy you a sandwich from that stand over there”.

Best case scenario, homeless guy agrees and you buy him a sandwich. Worst case, bum gets chitty with you and demands the money.

Either way, your son learns a valuable lesson. In the best case scenario he sees his old man help out another human being in need. In the worst case scenario your son now understands that people will lie to get money (after all, if the homeless guy really wanted it to buy some food, he would have taken you up on your offer).

Yes I would say she's right. Personally I would rather go out and work for my bread rather than beg for it. I'd rather go knocking on doors offering to do chores or something than beg, for fuks sake... Unless you're missing limbs you can still do something in exchange, but a lot of these bums know they can get more money in less time if they just beg for it and be sad sacks.
