$75k/yr for life or work jobs for 45-50 years -- which would you choose?

If you had the choice to be given $75k/year (increasing with inflation) and do whatever you want or the option that you work a job for 45-50 years -- which would you choose?

Rough estimate -- the life centered around the job consumes 60% of your waking hours. So your 45-50 years is essentially 18-20 years.

On the contrary. My time is incredibly valuable. That is how I know $75K isn't going to cut it. My time is worth way more than that.

75k a year without working isn't what it seems. I make around that now (as in, what someone of this salary would have after tax) and I don't even work full time. I combine a doctoral stipend with some side work.


It's enough to cover basic cost of living, some holidays, some luxuries here and there, but soaring cost of living will catch up and make even this level of income basic-brain. I can save up with it, but I've really got to watch my spending.


Your scenario is what I'm already living, and I want more money.

Not bad not bad. Perhaps another option is a small home in the home country and switch back and forth every 6 months or whatever while you rent the home country home.

your time could be worth $1M/hr but you essentially have 18-20 years if the job isn't something you wouldn't otherwise do regardless of the money.

You may have less than 18-20 years if the job adds stress to your life.

Being retired at young age would mean that you are going to be itching to do and explore new things with the amount of free time and energy. And $75k a year would not be enough to cure boredom.

but with the job you may have the funds to do more but not the time. Sort of a catch 22. and of course many jobs do lead to a life of depression also.

For example, a lot of dudes would play in the NBA for $100k/year just because they like to ball.

What kind of house you trying to buy? I could easily afford my current $500k house and still have $3k+ a month for other stuff.

I make more than $75k after taxes, but don't spend anywhere near that in a year. Have a nice house, nice car (it's paid off though, so that helps), go on at least 1-2 vacations a year, and waste money on random chit I want too.

$75k easily, I can live off of that. I'd need to budget better than I do now but well worth it to do fck nothing unless I want to.
