Army private defects to north korea

"The man is a U.S. service member who was touring the Joint Security Area, a border village between the two Koreas, when he "willingly" crossed the area's Military Demarcation Line, said Col. Isaac Taylor, the head of Public Affairs for the United States Forces Korea.

A Pentagon official who spoke to NPR on the condition of anonymity added that the soldier was facing disciplinary action and was dressed in civilian clothes at the time of the incident. As of midday Tuesday, authorities were not ready to release the man's identity given they had not yet notified his next of kin, the official said."

Dude was being sent back to the states from his base in south Korea to face disciplinary action and he snuck out of the airport, joined a tour group of the north/south Korean border and then hopped over to defect. Fkn lol at defecting to north korea just to avoid getting a peepee slap from the army

He's lucky he didn't get shot.

He must have been looking at serious prison time.

I read that it was a calm event, he even said " hahaha" as he crossed and the NK guards took him calmly. Maybe they'll use him as propaganda unless Biden trades him for some international terrorists or something

True, and there are rumors that there are/were many more defections that have and continue to go unreported because it makes America look bad.

He better pray that he doesn't get the Otto Warmbier treatment.
Not sure what he was being disciplined for, but risking being tortured to death in a North Korean prison doesn't make a lot of sense.

Nah, American defectors get treated like royalty in NK, there was a guy who did it like 20 years ago and he wrote a book I think.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Not even close. NK literally splitted from SK and lost a ton of men to the West. Treated like royaltee, LMAO.

And the reason why NK even has so many nukes was because they got threatened with nukes from the West during the Korean war.

There was a dude & a small group of other soldiers that crossed the line in the 1960s after the war. One dude James Joseph Dresnok became a movie star in North Korea playing the American villain in all the movies & was given tons of free stuff from the government. They even set him up with women to marry, but no North Korean women allowed due to North Korea's strict no interracial policy for Koreans.

The last time I remember an American stuck into N Korea, the Koreans conducted some mental medical treatments on him that made him insane. He died soon after being released.

In this case I'm not sure how well they'd treat him. He was running from being in trouble and since he was getting sent back to the states early I'm guessing it was a more serious charge like sexual assault or something. Otherwise a smaller charge would have been handled at the local army level in south Korea

LOL

If he was facing military law for something serious, this might be a good move.

If he ends up living quietly with a semi-comfortable life being an internal propagandist and having sex with the used up pleasure squads of the KCP elite, I consider that a win.

Yeah, it had to be something very serious to defect. I wonder what would happen to him if ever returned/got sent back? Is that death penalty stuff?

Probably not death penalty. That bowe bergdahl guy defected to the taliban and when he got home he just sat in court forever and eventually got off the hook with a dishonorable discharge. This guy would likely serve whatever sentence he would have got for the original crime he ran away from and then something extra for deserting the army.

He isnt coming back anytime soon.

Charles Jenkins did this same thing back in 1965. he was in the Army and thought he might be shipped to vietnam so he thought if he defected to dprk they would just send him to moscow and they would send him home.

Once he got there he realized they had no intention of letting him leave, they used him to teach classes and be an actor and stuff in propaganda movies.

Ended up stuck there for almost 40 years.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Small update

"Private Travis King was initially reported to South Korean police after allegedly punching a Korean national at a night club in Seoul on Sept. 25 last year, but was not indicted because the victim did not want to press charges.

In February he was fined 5 million won ($3,950) in Seoul on charges that included damaging public property, according to South Korean court documents. He was accused of repeatedly kicking a police patrol car in Seoul last year, causing several hundred dollars in damage.

He did not cooperate when apprehended by officers at the scene and was shouting profanities about Koreans and the Korean army."

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/b...dier-rcna95034

He had just gotten out of south Korean prison and was headed back to the states for more disciplinary action.

Not gonna lie, I was not expecting a black person to defect to NK, lawd good luck to him
