*400k reps* any advice on locating a buried artesian well? (plumbing brahs)

For people who work in this field or having direct experience, would anyone have any advice on locating where an artesian well might be on a property? The well doesn't have a cover sticking out of the ground so is most likely buried. The plumbing line by the pressure tank in the basement out of the house was snaked and stopped at around 25 feet, which places it right in the middle of the driveway. Would it be right at the point the snake stopped at or could it branch out left or right?

Asking for a buddy with a cottage. He needs to replace the artesian well pump or motor as it died and there is no water to his house. Problem is, it's buried. Apparently now need to excavate the property to find it and then replace the broken piece. Trying to help him out by gathering info. I don't know anything about this stuff but figured some people here might know.

Thanks, boyos!

sonic vibration locator pretty much anything for water/PVC, ground penetrating radar has a trouble with it but worth a shot but thats like $500+

maybe get lucky with a "dowser"

look up property in city to see if there was any permit, or the company who originally installed the well

The house I had in NY had an artesan well.

Loved that water.

perhaps a metal detector?
start where the pipe comes out of the cottage and just follow it.

I can't imagine someone putting a driveway over a well.
but if they didn't know it was there, maybe.
Or more logically the pipe 90's for some reason.
maybe to get around some object like a tree or large rock.

How deep is the frost line where the cottage is?
the pipe needs to be lower than that so they don't freeze.

I really can't say. The driveway is pretty long and flat. So apparently the snake reached 25 feet away from the house and that brings him right in the middle of his dirt driveway. I don't know where else it could be.

Yeah, but confusing for them to put the driveway over it, no?

If they are using a snake, can't they use really hot water and do thermal imaging? I did that on one of my properties to check for a potential leak in a pipe.

Just came back from popping over there. We figured a few things:

Well has to be 100 feet from the drain field of the septic tank so it can't be in the driveway.
100 feet is on the other side of the garage. If it's up to code it's 3 meters from a building, so basically 3 meters besides the garage.
All estimations seem to fit and point towards the fact that it's in that area. Thing is, it's probably 5-6 feet deep and I doubt a metal detecter can detect that, so what it'll most likely have to come to is hiring an excavation company to come do some digging. At least it's a much closer estimate.

Thanks to people ITT for advice. Will rep thy anguses tenderly. Any other advice would be welcome. It's all pretty interesting but very distressing for him, evidently. I'm sure it'll cost a lot.
