They're nuts.
Every doomsday prepper I know has about 3 - 6 months worth of supplies on hand, and they think that their guns would protect them from hungry mobs of people who realize they still have some resources.
Or if they assume it's a full-on apocalypse type situation with others not around, who even wants to make it for that anyway? Most of them would be dead within 2 or 3 months of running out of their pre-packaged supplies, so they'd better have YEARS of it on hand to give themselves time to sort out how to meet their needs without it.

Depends on the level.
Actual "doomsday" like BabyWhatTheFuksHisName - mentally ill (and in his case, annoyingly tiresome)
More reasonable - smart.
There's a number of scenarios - mostly natural disasters - that can cause short term disruptions in the availability of necessities, and it's a good idea to be prepared for those. The ones that think WWIII is just around the corner are just whacko.

Unless you have a Hidden bunker on a mountain with at least a years worth of supplies it is a complete waste of time.

Preparing "for the worst", including in terms of financial investments, provides some with the security they need to feel well given the current state of this world.
Some could make a lot more money investing in different ways - but what is peace of mind worth to you?
I know one that lives "normally" but also built a set of..."properties" linked together on a big piece of land with lots of natural water flow. For him it is enough knowing he and his family and closest like-minded friends could move there and defend it completely from the folks who don't ever prepare for a rainy day and sit with their hand held out crying why.

depends on the reason
like if they are prepping for a race of face sucking aliens that will make you turn into an subservient zombie to do their bidding, I'd say thats pretty crazy

Depends on the level of preparation. Here, when a hurricane hits, there is no power, a run on supplies at stores and no running water. So, preparing for that I understand. Running to the hills of Tennesse to hide with guns is retarded. As a friend of mine says, "If you are living like a peasant, you are going to get rolled like one."

I think it is actually a cool hobby.
1. Makes your brain solve problems - this is especially true for those that construct underground houses and want amenities and whatnot
2. E.g. as kids we used to role play in many scenarios and it is good sometimes to escape the officecel life
3. A hobby that can actually have some usability after all the money and time invested in it - you don't need a zombie or nuclear apocalypse, floods/outages civil instability can also do the trick

Its diffucult to imagine a scenario where everything is wiped out and you need a bug out bag and to rely on your supply of canned peaches.
That would mean an entire break down of society, the supply chain, power grids, everything.
Even in terrible hurricanes and stuff like that you dont see that. You see some power outages and destruction of course but not on a nationwide scale and they go out of their way to fix it to get everything back up and running,
Politicians have skin in the game when it comes to profiting of society running so no way would they just allow a complete collapse like some movie.
Power outages or a slow decay would be more likely but even then its difficult to imagine they would last super long, Even in an attack they would still be able to restore power as the system is just so complex.
I dont have anything stashed for some apocalypse because I simply plan on eating what is in my neighbors cupboards.

Smart as long as you don't obsess over it. There's nothing wrong with being prepared, and learn and have the skills to survive, and have resources in reserve.
What isn't smart is being so deep down the rabbit hole that you forget to live and enjoy life now. Some let their fears and paranoia kill their day to day happiness.

Yeah it’s so stupid to have supplies like water, food, and hygiene essentials on hand
There’s never gonna be a shortage of anything

Depends on the level of prepping.
It's always good to have a supply of non-perishable foods, water, and a bug out bag stored in case of anything. Growing your own food is also a benefit too.
Being fully dependent on grocery supply is foolish. Most cons00mers would be fuked because they think the grocery store will always be there.

just a niche community whose mentality is being exploited for money.
We are all subject to that normal human condition to a degree.
The resources used to do what these guys do will generally never provide the benefit they think it will. Unless they just like that peace of mind. I would be careful there, because insurance provides a peace of mind as well. That idea is too easily exploited.
I assume most peepers have no idea about survival anything and just buy what they think are cool things.
I think the part of the community that is out there developing survival skills (off the gun range of course, everyone does that), is probably a small percentage.
Without these cool things they spend money on, they are pretty much useless post-apocalypse.

Preppers that do it specifically because of apocalyptic like scenarios are idiots. Being prepared for natural disasters and infrastructure break downs that can last a few weeks is extremely smart. Energy backup, water source, and at least 6 months of food is where it is at, provided it is not too financially burdensome.
I live in a condo downtown, but if I were to ever get a house it would ideally have some sort of well for water, solar + battery, small generator, and a little bit of land to allow some sort of gardening/farming.
Electricity is vastly underrated for survival. A huge portion of the water we drink is due to city infrastructure that pumps it to water towers. That water is then gravity fed to your house. If electricity can't power those pumps there is only a few days worth of water in those towers before your main water source is gone. Having your own water source, such as a well, along with power backup to run pumps you could survive almost indefinitely where other people might die as soon as a week. Having backup power allows you to power your refrigerators/freezers that is tied to your supply of food as well as allowing you to cook.

General preparedness is good, especially for things like natural disasters and such, but a lot of people become obsessed with it and their whole life revolves around it.

The rule I followed is to have enough stuff for two weeks. If things are bad enough that everything is gone for longer than that, you're basically screwed anyway.
So I have a generator and gas, water and food I can cook on a stove with propane, hand crank lanterns, a hand crank radio and a power cell for shorter outages. Don't think that makes me a prepper, but we had an incident last year where a freak windstorm took out city power for three days and I was fine.

I think our normal shopping keeps the pantry stocked for a month of survival or more and we could survive on what's in the kitchen cupboards "if we had too...." but I don't make any regular attempt to "PREP" we just shop the weekly sales and our freezer/fridge cupboards always seem to be full from that.
I imagine it's the same for most normal people. the GiJoe Cosplay SpecLARPS are DELUSIONAL and really underestimate how much they depend onf society and CIVILIZATION to enjoy "the good life"
