lifting belts are a band aid

am i wrong?

i got in an argument with an idgit that was using a belt while squatting 135lb's on reddit when he asked for a form check i told him he's only hampering him self and should only really be using a belt if he's going for a 1rm or training to get ready for a 1rm to get use to the fit of the belt

in my opinion using a belt is just coping for a weak core.

im talking about squats and deadlifts really. though i have seen numpties use belts for OHP too

Most people belt when they hit 500s for squat and deads though.

It’s just an additional assistance for safety.

if you understand how to brace your core during heavy compound lifts, having a belt on allows you to brace against something, thus protect the spine more

most people have no ****ing clue how to do either though

A good belt helps you brace with heavy weight, not just a band aid IMO. Although most belts people used in the gym are near useless.

Senseless to use at 135lbs though

I don’t like it. Gives you a false since of safety. If you feel like you need a belt, the weight is too heavy srs

It’s like football helmets. Probably would be fewer cases of CTE if they played without helmets

Guy at my (pure)gym comes in at 7:30pm

Lifting belt
SBD attire (deadlifting socks, t shirt, knee sleeves)
Wraps
Straps

Takes every 20kg plate in the gym (8 of them), loads the bar on a rack and does 3 shrugs every 5 minutes, looking around thinking he's a boss after every set.

Does this every time I see him

wtf bro

yeah im pretty sure there was a whole documentary on how american football players were ending up with brain damage later on in life because of the sport and that was with helmets. i think it's more a culture thing. or rugby players just don't whine about it

i see old Boomers walking around Planet Fitness wearing lifting belts but they do no lifting. all they do is walk around like they're lost, constantly spray/wipe down equipment, roll around on the floor, talk to other Boomers, and constantly get in my way. it's annoying.

Just lol at using a belt if you are squatting less than 225x10.

I wear a lifting belt when I'm humping your mom. No complaints from her so far.

I mostly agree. I really only use a belt when going above 600 pounds

For squats or deadlifts they are helpful. Besides those 2 things I don't really see the need. Some dudes wear lifting belts from beginning to end regardless of what they are doing.

I don't judge others, but I don't like those people.

used to think this too until i watched an interesting video.

Big guy said he used them simply to prevent injuries when going heavier which made sense.

The recovery from the injury would take way longer than just wearing the belt so i started wearing one for heavier lifts.

Sciatica is no joke so you might want to look into wearing a belt when going heavy.
