Florida losing home insurance like crazy

Insuring a home in Florida got a little bit more difficult this week after AAA joined a growing list of companies that are ending some homeowner insurance policies in Florida.

The Florida-based insurer will not renew package policies that combine home, automobile and optional umbrella coverage, according to the Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY Network. With hurricane season around the corner and drastically fewer insurance offerings, this could leave some vulnerable.

While AAA's move will only affect a “small number” of policyholders, the news was almost swept away in the deluge of news following Farmers Insurance's surprise announcement that it is pulling out of the state.

The back-to-back announcements underscore the insurance crisis Florida residents have been facing for the past 18 months.

And it's a crisis that's largely manmade, according to Mark Friedlander, spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, as several local insurance providers folded and three national insurers have withdrawn from the state. Despite recent legislation intended to alleviate the problems fueling the crisis, he said the market volatility persists.

I remember after the hurricane, Ian, my home owners insurance policy nearly doubled in price.

I shopped around and found insurance with USAA that fit my needs and cost less than I was paying before the hurricane. the two policies, old and new, don't match but it gets the job done for me.

Over the years I've found homeowners insurance to be a rip off. Others I know say similar. It seems little is approved when it comes to home damage. The one exception being a fire. If I had a fire I'm guessing I'd likely receive decent insurance coverage but that isn't a certainty. When I lived in Illinois I had a small fire in my place. The insurance company did well at repairing the room damaged but screwed me over on replacing lost items that were in the room.

Hope eventually a good answer is found for Florida's insurance emergency. It is an issue that upsets many, and understandably so.

I was looking to buy a 2nd home in FL last year in the Fort Myers area (before the Hurricane) and was pretty surprised at how high the home insurance was. And this is coming from a person who lives in S CA.

Seems like a major rip off and honestly I am surprised at how much housing has gone up in FL considering the high cost of insuring your home there.
