A little girl who was reportedly left strapped to a catamaran while her parents cooked dinner has been found drowned.

The 13-month-old toddler, named Māhina Toki, died Friday after falling from the catamaran Kalamari, which was docked in Musket Cove in western Fiji.

The New Zealand Herald cited a Fiji police spokesman as saying the child had been strapped into a harness on the deck and watching a movie while her parents, Mark and Kiri, were cooking dinner in the galley.

The girl’s parents were not able to find her when they returned.

Parents already received $18,000 on some kiwi version of gofundme.



Now, maybe I am old-fashioned, but I don't think anyone should leave a little child all alone on a boat while mom and dad are cooking food (more likely porking each other). I think mom and dad should be charged with negligence.

Probably not far unless it is a very large catamaran.

Still, I think it's just basic common sense that you don't leave your baby unattended, especially near large bodies of water, and if they are out of your view. It's like that story about a mom who put her baby in the car safety seat in the driveway and then drove the seat and killed her child. And she was like, "I didn't know I was so close" or something to that effect. And of course you hear numerous stories about parents leaving their kids in the backseat of the car only to let them die and claim, "I didn't know my kid was back there". I just feel like there are too instances of parental neglicence and yet, society somehow takes the parents side and sympathizes with them.

Probably first time parents and that’s right the age where kids start being able to unclip harnesses etc..

Seems like they lived on the boat since they were cooking on the galley?

It is a tragedy and reminds me why I constantly keep tabs on the kids. Fact is my 20 month old can’t be trusted to stay put in any high chair or restraint short of a car seat and even then she can unclip one of the car seat buckles if she is trying hard enough.


She is also in her third week of drowning prevention / learning how to float which would be something they probably should have looked into if they were literally living on the water. I also don’t let my toddler on a boat or dock without a life vest.

Idk it’s a tragedy but also a warning and the parents definitely fuked up.

Oh I wasn't meaning to excuse anything. It was a reply to the previous poster asking how far away they were.

If your child died due to your own negligence or stupidity then you have to live with that.

Aware me of this srs. Never heard of this and mine's almost 20 months now so this is very relevant to me.
