Anyone in the south noticed the lightning bugs are missing?

When I was a little kid in Florida, I remember going outside at night and finding lightning bugs EVERYWHERE! They would glow at night and it was so easy to catch them, they were all over the place.


Now that I think of it, I can't remember seeing a single lightning bug at night, in many years now.

When I was a kid growing up In nyc I would see them in my backyard every evening during the summer. At some point they just disappeared.

I would see the every summer in MI. We did have some here in DFW in 2020...maybe 2021. I think I recall maybe seeing 1 once this year.

Chris Martenson often comments on the lack of bugs now, and he is right.

I remember going on road trips growing up and having bugs splattered on the windshield of the car regularly. Now I've driven cross country multiple times in recent years and across TX twice in the last year or so and I might have one or two on the glass after.

They're still around but not like they used to be. When I was a kid they were everywhere all summer. I still see the ones with the greenish yellow lights occasionally but its pretty rare. I haven't seen one of the ones with orange lights since I was a kid. Also there was a field by the house I grew up in that would literally be covered in monarch butterflies during certain times of the year but its not like that anymore

my daughter was out the other night catching them. I feel like I don't see nearly as many now as a kid, but I grew up 500 miles away so I assumed that was a factor.

I don't see grasshoppers nearly as much as when I was a kid.


But I do see more toads now than ever before.

There’s still a few here but not like 30 yrs ago. We’d fill up a mason jar with them


Even more concerning is the lack of birds. At my grandparents farm there’d always be 50+ Robins, blue jays, mocking birds etc. Now I go and might see 1-2 birds.


We are leeches and completely destroying the planet. Nobody cares tho and we can’t do much to stop it. Just will need to find another planet to completely suck dry of resources.

It's development. The additional light jacks with their mating (what the tail light is actually for). We used to have tons of them around our house until they turned the cow pasture across the road into a grocery store and elementary school. Still see bunches at my daughter's house, but they live out in the sticks.

I don't see many insects, period. I remember when my family would go on road trips in the summer the grill of the car and windshield would be COVERED with bug guts and my dad would have to get out while refueling to clean the windshield. Now? I can drive from San Diego to Sacramento (600miles) and only have a few bug spatters here and there.
