You do exercises that engage them, and you get lower bf to show them off. Crazy right

Considering that the average person does not lift, any sort of resistance exercise will build muscle.

I've done heavy squats/deads 2x/week for 10 years and almost never hit abs directly. In the past year I've gotten down to single digit bodyfat and can say that my abs/core are on par with my other bodyparts that were trained 10-15 sets/week. However since I've started training them directly 3x/week Ive noticed a slight increase in size, but more interestinglly an insane rate of recovery. Did one workout of 5 sets, was sore for 24 hours, not I cant make them sore unless I hit them so hard it compramises my week of compounds. So speedy recovery and used in every moevement, no reason to not give them 10-15 sets/week, but also if you actually lift heavy you'll be okay.
Plus its kinda like legs where a good pump and some intense sets will make your stomach upset and cause mild nausea, which is good for the soul.

chinups can help grow your biceps too, but you still want to do preacher/concentration/hammer curls with dumbbells.
