Bookcels - are there any horror books that are terrifying?

Someone just told me about “playground” but it doesn’t sound like an actual horror book, more gore than anything….sometimes people say books are more terrifying than movies, is this true for any horrors you’ve read?

Most Stephen King books are FAR better than the movies. Depends on your type of horror, if you want creepy, scary or just gross.

Only ever read one book and it was pet sematary, it was 10/10, have tried reading the running man since then but can’t get into it, I’m not a bookcel but I do want to at least give it a go

For Stephen King: The Shining, Needful Things, IT, Different Seasons are all top tier - Different Seasons is short stories but has one called Apt Pupil that is creepy as hell.

That's one of my favorite King books right there. I'd recommend Salem's Lot if you liked Pet Sematary. I also liked Bag of Bones, but don't think it was as "scary" as the other two. The Outsider was pretty creepy as well.

HP Lovecraft books are good horror, but not in the gore sense. They're good at building atmosphere, dread, etc. they're short stories too.

"House of Leaves" is good but it's a difficult read. If you commit yourself to it, it's pretty scary.

Early SK, terrible at writing endings now. Dark Half is a good book too.

Then there are books such as Ray Bradbury - Something Wicked This Way Comes, Dan Simmons - The Terror, Peter Straub - Ghost Story, Cormac McCarthy - The Road, etc
