FBI Chief who investigated Trump set to plead guilty for colluding with Russia

This is the Counterintelligence Chief in NY who investigated Trump for Russian collusion. Lmao.

A former FBI agent accused by U.S. prosecutors of working for sanctioned Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska may change his plea in relation to criminal charges of evading U.S. sanctions and money laundering, court records showed on Monday.

Charles McGonigal had previously pleaded not guilty. A change of plea hearing before U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rearden in Manhattan has been scheduled for Aug. 15.

McGonigal served as a top FBI counterintelligence official in New York during the Russia probe of former President Donald Trump.

McGonigal's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan, which brought the case, declined to comment.

During a status conference last week, McGonigal lawyer Seth DuCharme said there was a 'decent chance the case is going to be resolved.'

Prosecutors in January said McGonigal, who led the FBI's counterintelligence division in New York before retiring in 2018, received concealed payments from Deripaska in exchange for investigating a rival oligarch and unsuccessfully pushed in 2019 to lift U.S. sanctions on Deripaska.

The charges against McGonigal came as U.S. prosecutors ramped up efforts to enforce sanctions on Russian officials and police their alleged enablers in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

Deripaska, the founder of Russian aluminum company Rusal , was among two dozen Russian oligarchs and government officials blacklisted by Washington in 2018 in reaction to Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

This isn't fake news, but the Daily Mail headline is misleading. He wasn't colluding withRussia, he was illegally working with Oleg Deripaska, taking bribes to investigate a rival Russian billionaire instead.

McGonigal and Shestakov, who worked for the FBI investigating oligarchs, allegedly agreed in 2021 to investigate a rival Russian oligarch in return for payments from Deripaska, according to the Justice Department. McGonigal and Shestakov are accused of receiving payments through shell companies and forging signatures in order to keep it a secret that Deripaska was paying them.

Both face money laundering charges in addition to charges for violating sanctions. Each of four counts carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Deripaska isn't exactly in high favor with the Putin regime right now. He called for peace in Ukraine and said that destroying Ukraine would be a colossal mistake. For his effort, the government ofRussiastarted seizing his assets. I think he's one more statement like that away from "falling" from a window.

A Russian court ordered the seizure of a luxury hotel complex owned by Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska after he criticized President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine earlier this year, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The court order to seize the $1bn Imeretinskiy hotel and marina complex in Sochi came in September after the Kremlin asked Deripaska to stop publicly criticizing the war, according to two people familiar with the matter, the Financial Times reported.

Deripaska said in March that peace was needed “as soon as possible” and in June stressed that “destroying Ukraine would be a colossal mistake,” the Financial Times reported.

“The Kremlin asked him to calm down,” one person close to Deripaska told the Financial Times, while another Deripaska associate said that the Kremlin repeated its request on at least one occasion.
I'm not defending this FBI guy. Taking bribes from a foreign agent under sanctions is illegal and he should go to prison for it. This story just needs more context than the Daily Mail's clickbait headline. He was not colluding with the Russian government any more than Trump was.

comical. every single thing they accused Trump of doing that involved anything remotely connected to anything Russian or having to do with Russia (even when it was Ukrainians) was the big bad boogeyman known as the collective RUSSIA.

What this guy did is more RUSSIA than anything they ever accused Trump of doing.

So a Russian oligarch infiltrated the top levels of the FBI? And this is supposed to be a “win” for the MAGA crowd that claimed left, right, and sideways that Russia wasn’t interfering in our democracy?

Yes. putting an FBI agent in jail who was working with Russians illegally is absolutely a "win" for all Americans, including but not limited to the MAGA crowd.

Yes … indeed. You might also conclude that he was compromised in his investigation into Russian collusion within the US government and deliberately didn’t find evidence that might have existed in other branches of the government.

And this is where ur autism kicks in and you become too stupid to see people are stuck on two narratives. Yours is the first, the one others believe, is he is being unjustly targeted by a compromised and corrupt govt.

Making the crux of your argument being they are stupid because they don’t believe something that doesn’t exist for them, demonstrates both a lack of care as to the outcome of your words other than a slight ego boost, and a remarkably shortsighted understanding of the situation.

I understand this is probably your only social outlet, but why even bother anymore, just rot.

LOL I would not conclude that at all. The FBI was trying to spitroast Trump. Between the two options, I would conclude it is more likely he would have used his contacts to create false evidence.

You think the Russian billionaire pulling this guys string wants to bring front and center to worldwide 24/7 coverage that Russia is controlling high-level US officials? FFS. Talk about confirmation bias.

Literally anything he did re: investigating Russian influence in the US is 100% meaningless and everyone with two brain cells and an ounce of intellectual honesty knows that.

Apparently not and he is 100% proof that such investigations need to happen. He just wasn’t the guy to lead it. We obviously need another serious probe into this. Any patriotic American should want to get to the bottom of whatever BS Russia is trying to pull.

I would 100% support a serious probe into the FBI, congress, the Bidens, the Clintons, the Bushes, the Trumps, and the Obamas and their ties with Russia.

Well the FBI for sure. I think there needs to be evidence before a probe is launched into any individual. But clearly we’ve been compromised by at least one Russian billionaire. Given they are currently the only geopolitical rival making active threats against us I think this should be taken seriously.

It's both. They are nitpicking his crimes on the document case. On the other hand, his attempt to obstruct a proceeding was obvious. The fake elector scheme was also obvious.
