Climate-friendly cows being bred to belch less methane

The arrival of commercially available genetics to produce dairy cattle that emit less methane could help reduce one of the biggest sources of the potent greenhouse gas, scientists and cattle industry experts say.

Burps are the top source of methane emissions from cattle. Semex, the genetics company that sold Mr Loewith the semen, said adoption of the low-methane trait could reduce methane emissions from Canada’s dairy herd by 1.5 per cent annually, and up to 20 per cent-30 per cent by 2050.

This spring, the company began marketing semen with the methane trait in 80 countries. Early sales include a farm in Britain and dairies in the US and Slovakia, said vice-president Drew Sloan.

OP, probably wasn't the best idea to let miscers know there is a company that sells semen.

"semen with the methane trait" -a phrase I never thought I'd see in my lifetime.

Seems a bit much considering there are approved feed additives that reduce methane from cows and other livestock by 40% right away, or even more when more than one is used. One I remember reading about a few years ago is called Bovaer and was tested on several continents.

This seems apropos to the climate brigade, seeing as they have plenty of cows who produce nothing but hot air.

the bacteria that live in cows' guts are what produces the methane burps, not the cows themselves.
you can't genetically modify a cow for that to not happen.
but I guess you could say you did, and maybe make a bit of money before some smartass points out you're selling magic beans.

edit: I guess you might be able to genetically engineer a cow that burps less, but farts more?

knowing how cow's guts work, if you made them unable to belch, they'd probably be unable to regurgitate their cud either, which I would guess would make them fart even more, while also making less efficient use of their food.
make cows belch less, fart more, and have to eat more. genius.

So, they'd rather try to re-engineer nature than tell the billionaires to stop treating their private jets like ubers to fly everywhere sniffing their own farts about how they're "saving the planet" by being obnoxious kunts?

Changing the biology will have an impact on the entire system of the cow, including the meat. Dunno enough about bovine/ruminants to understand it all, but I do know that it's extremely important to release gasses from the rumen and the gasses are a byproduct of important processes.

There is going to be a trade off that they aren't saying, and the most obvious is going to be price. A good beef cow could sell for about 800-1200, but I'm guessing these cows will cost 3-5000, possibly more. A steal will end up costing us $150+

I don't think it's that simple. Some feed additives that reduce their methane burps and farts have caused them to eat less feed and have less milk production, but others have not had any effects on their size or milk production.

This isn't about climate change, but rather patenting cows. It's GMO crops applied to livestock.

Make a lower methane cow strand and patent it.

Pass "climate change" laws requiring all cows to be lower methane.

All cows then become the new patented version and no "natural" cows exist in that country.

$$$$$$ for those who hold the patents and the politicians who passed the laws.
