Yes

But if your genetically predisposed it has less chance of manifesting if you don’t drink young

I was a drunk by age 14 so I can’t keep it under control for long. I was able to be a “functioning” alcoholic (hold a job down, not miss work, keep a girlfriend etc) for almost a decade before hardcore blackouts and fuked up chit started happening like it did when I was 18.

I intend to steer my children away from early drinking with the knowledge they could very well develop alcoholism by experimenting too young. Literally everyone on my moms side is alcoholic/AA recovery.

Yea. My grandfather, my father and now me. I’m sober the past week though. Every single day is a battle.

Yep. I had a grandmother from my dads side, a grandfather from my moms side, an aunt (mom's sister), and I am pretty sure my brother is.

So yeah.

Bunch of alcoholics on my father's side, and my father has somehow managed to be a functional alcoholic all his life. I didn't start drinking until 18 and don't regret that decision as I think that reduced my risk of becoming an alcoholic myself.

I guess it's common for men to use alcohol to self-medicate against anxiety/depression which sucks; it's really tempting for me these days so can certainly relate

I'm under the impression that there are more alcoholics in America than there are people who don't drink

No, I was pretty much the only one who seemed to love drinking.

You’re kinda lucky. It wakes me up and I just want to keep drinking non stop then if I reach blackout levels I turn into a complete unpredictable maniac and just a few of those nights costed me pretty much all my friends and family.

A lot of people come from families with many alcoholics/semi-alcoholics. People just don't pay much attention to it until some wild chit goes down because of the drinking, or because they personally become annoyed with a particular person's drinking.

On both sides yes. My dad is Eastern European and my mom has German in her. Dad said sone guy in our family was like 6-5 315 and would drink a gallon a day and go to bars fighting people. I discovered alcohol at like age 15 when I drank a whole bottle of scotch. It was over then. I mostly like beer though and keep melatonin at home so if I start getting that feeling where I know I’m about to binge bill pop melatonin and go to sleep

Yes....most of my family..

I waited till later in life to drink, but after seeing what it did to family members I quit. Stayed away from it all as I felt it adds no positive value to life.

I grew up watching my dad almost never drink because his father was an alcoholic he despised, who died well before I was born. Both of my dad's brothers dipped in and out of alcoholism. On my mom's side one of my aunts and her husband were functioning alcoholics that shockingly lived into their mid 70s. Odd because they were obese too. Hell, for one of the holidays I remember my aunt's husband drinking a bottle of whiskey by himself before dinner, switching to beer and talking to him you'd have no idea he'd had a drop. That's a professional drinker.

One of my brothers had periods of alcohol abuse. He said if he weren't on one of his meds for mental illness he had, he'd be a raging alcoholic. I've learned to keep it in check. I drink often but rarely get drunk. I'm usually good with 3 drinks
