I fuked up my back deadlifting

So basically I felt some sht pop in my lower back. I can’t tell though if it’s bad or just some nerve type sciatic ****. I can still walk around and sht but I can’t really bend over no homeowner.

I don’t wanna lose gains though cuz I been making good progress. If I can still squat then I’m satisfied. Yesterday I tried 90% of my 5 rep max for sets of 5 and it went well till the last rep where I paused the rep.

Then when I woke up today my back was fukked. Just wondering if I can sleep/lift this **** off or do I have to see the doctor. I’m fine with not deadlifting again but I need to be able to still do squats fuark.

Or is there like a way I can just continue progressing squats but like in a safe way while still increasing strength? I can still bench and do upper body lifts no problem.

We've been trying to tell you guys still hung up on the "Big 3" (or Big 4, if OHP is included) that there's more to lifting than hyper focusing on those compound lifts.

I'll never understand why dudes do deadlifts well into their 30's and beyond if they aren't competing in powerlifting comps. It's arguably the lowest reward to effort/CNS taxation required ratio lift there is.

Lay off squats for awhile until you feel like you've healed up, and ditch deadlifting for good. The dumbest thing you could do right now is try to "power through it", believe me.

I’ll occasionally squat at a moderate weight for fitness purposes but jflol if you’re deadliftmaxxing 400+ pounds. Gonna destroy your back

how much were you lifting tho? thats all that matters...
I lift to deadlift/squat/db row/ohp because they exhaust me way more than curls or anything isolated.
Something like that happened to me a month ago or so, no pop though, had no pain until the middle of the next day after sitting at a desk for hours. Couldn't walk without looking like a tard or any pain. Just lifted around it and it was gone in like a week. Keep lifting but don't do anything that strains your back

Yes I know I’m a retard blah blah. The knew the risks of deadlifting and sht and still did them. Idk man I never had a problem with them before.

I just wanna know what I should do to lift around it while at least maintaining squat gains. I’m still gonna bench and OHP and **** but what should I do for lower body/back to maintain?

My main goal is to maintain squat strength at this point while my lower back heals. I heard it’s actually not good to just sleep and rest.

If it's only been a day or 2 it's probably just a muscle spasm. It will get better within a week you pu$$y

They can feel like you've pulled a muscle, or even hurt your spine.

do leg press, leg extensions, roll out your lower back, keep exercising and getting blood flowing through the body. If you have access to a hot tub with jets, use the jets to massage the area, helped me a lot when I pinched a nerve in my neck. Bike or do the stairmaster for cardio. Try new machines or exercises that don't engage the core a lot, you won't get too fukked up from not squatting/deadlifting for a few weeks
If you're gonna OHP probably do it seated. Its your body do whatever you want with it, just know there's a risk you fuk up your back more and extend the time you need to recover.

I already told you, don't try to "power through" anything. Take it easy with lifting and figure out what causes you pain and what doesn't. If something causes you pain, then listen to your body and don't F'ing do it until you're healed.

You're sounding like one of those guys who can't learn their lesson until something chittier than an injury you'll shake off within a couple months happens to them. Dude, it sounds like you'll be just fine. Take the hint your body is trying to give you and start lifting smarter. I know it sucks, but you can't just lift like a jackasss and get away with it like someone in their early-20's forever.

You should seriously consider taking a break and look up the McKenzie method for treatment low back or something else in that line of thinking.

It might get a lot worse very soon for you if you don't stop right now and deal with this issue.

No, it's not dumb. It's pretty basic life advice, tbh. Unless OP is in some huge rush to get ready for a deadlifting comp, there's zero reason for him to mess around with deadlifts until he heals from whatever it was. People who push through lesser back injuries on deadlifts and squats are begging to go to snap city, and you're a dumbasss to suggest a hobbyist lifter push through it.

Yeah he can look up back recovery stretches and what not, and that's all fine and well. That's beside the greater point that lifting injuries need *time* to heal. Especially when you aren't in your 20's anymore. If he takes it easy, he could be back like nothing happened within a matter of weeks. If he pushes through it, he is extremely likely to aggrevate it and slow the healing way down, or even maybe make it worse.

That's not true cause that is what the low back protocol is for - you're back lifting heavy in a matter of weeks

I think it's a bit of both.

Hip-hinge movements are beneficial for everyone, but thespecific typevaries from person to person and anatomy to anatomy, in terms of what works best and is most 'natural'. Some people can conventional DL all their lives with zero issue. Some need to modify it slightly and will safely progress forever with an RDL or SLDL. Some will need to modify even further to sumo, or use a trap bar, or even further and do a modified GHR.

Thereisa bit of truth to 'if you're not powerlifting there is no good reason to conventional DL from the floor when comparing risk to benefit', but people who entirely eliminate hip hinge movements to 'save their back' are doing some serious disservice to themselves.

Listen to this guy. Rest for at least two weeks and then get back to it with low-mid load so long as you don't feel pain. It's still fine to work upper body, so it's not like you aren't going to gym period. Just lay off your back for a bit.

Soure: I'm a physical therapist. Also, same thing happened to me when I was younger except it was good mornings.

If you have any nerve type symptoms (tingling, sharpness, electricity feeling), lay off for a lot longer and schedule a visit to your PCP.
