Wrestling was literally 100x more entertaining back when there was actual competition among different companies. Without WWF and WCW feuding the way they did back in the 90's, we'd have never had 90's WCW as we know it, wouldn't have gotten WWF's Attitude era. Hell, even ECW was way better than the crap they have today.

Goes back further to 80's/70's, too. Obviously everything was much smaller time back then, but those companies weren't trying to be global brands like WWE of today does. I could pull up any random wrestling promos/matches from the even the 70's and be far more entertained by it than anything WWE has done in the last 20 years.

I'd wager a guess that it has a lot to do with the fact that for like 22+ years now, they've been the only legit game in town. You had some flash in the pan promotions like TNA, but they always either tank or fail to truly take off in the first place. Now (and then too), WWE is so huge that they can basically just squash any competion. Kind of like how the NFL easily stamped out the USFL back in 80's, and is so huge that challengers like XFL always amounted to a gag.

So, if big time wrestling fans want their fix, it's either WWE or bust, even if WWE sucks. Which seems to be a business model that WWE thrives on. But I agree with you though, it's unwatchable, even if there are no good alternatives.

It is mostly because of them hiring Nick Khan-the best hire they have ever made. He has gotten them mammoth deals with the Saudi's & others.

Yeah? In any case, F the WWE. Sometimes I wonder how much more quality wrestling we could have gotten if WCW hadn't gotten the boot from TNT. Eric Bischoff was ready to buy out the company with a few other WCW guys, and I think they could have turned it around (dude was still awesome in WWE for awhile after WCW folded), but they just didn't have a viable network willing to have them at the worst time possible.

I haven't seen any wrestling since 2001 or so. John Cena had just emerged as a new wrestler the last time I watched wrestling. The only other 'in' I have is that an old friend is now a professional wrestler and wrestles with people I used to watch on TV so he feeds me tidbits of anecdotes and stories about drinking with, partying, and hanging out with dudes like RVD and the like. Interesting stuff.

But dude, 90s attitude era WWF was the schit. That stuff was so much fun as a kid. I'd rent all the PPVs on VHS at the local video store. We'd get in trouble at school for doing the DX 'suck it' move to teachers lmfao.

Do you not remember how bad WCW television was from 1999-2001? It started long before Russo arrived. Even though it was always my favourite company over WWF & it was sad to see it go, I kind of also agree with Flair when he said he was so happy it was over, due to how incompetent it had been for so long.

Simply Bischoff, due to his pandering to Hogan, Nash etc had the biggest hand in making WCW something that couldn't carry on airing after the merger-if they were doing the numbers of 1997 & 1998 it would never have been cancelled. Russo came in & started drilling holes in the Titanic & speeding it up to the iceberg & the period of Russo & Bischoff combined as shown by the BATB 2000 dark side episode showed just how dumb both of them are.

Are you familiar with AEW? I’m guessing you’ve at least heard of it. They brought me back to regularly watching wrestling in 2019 after I quit back in 2002.

I’m not into it as much as I was in 2019-2022, but they are the biggest competition WWE has had since WCW went out of business.

AEW does maybe 50% of the numbers WWE does in terms of TV ratings and live attendance. They’re doing a stadium show in the UK this month thats sold over 80,000 tickets.

Maybe worth checking out if you dislike WWE but still have interest in wrestling, as they are the #2 promotion. Way bigger than TNA ever was, but not nearly as big as WCW.
