Never been a travelcel but it’s what everyone seems to do at some point.

The longest I've ever traveled for was 4 months, but I've met tons of people while traveling whove done it for multiple years.

The answer to this question probably has to do with your alternatives. A guy I know who has been traveling for about 2 years now is from Argentina, which obviously has a terrible economy and hyperinflation. He made a good amount of money in US Dollars working remote in Tech, but lost his job in like 2022, and started traveling.

Other people I've met were making Youtube videos, and others had full remote jobs and would just hop around from city to city every month.

In general, for some types of people this lifestyle works. Me personally, I have plenty of money to travel for years straight, but in general I don't like traveling for that long. Eventually I need some kind of stability and to come back home to touch base with clients and make sure my business will still be there when I arrive back.

But for people who have savings and are in unstable political situations or tired of working BS jobs, it's a pretty attractive proposition.

I've met a decent amount of people who do this, and they all kinda suck though. Having to work full time in any location makes it not as special. These people end up hanging out only with other expats doing that same thing, and are really fuking lame.

It sucks being in a foreign country and getting hooked up with groups of people who only talk about their work because their lives are so lame otherwise that they have notihing else to discuss.

I could travel for a year or more at time since I'm retired, but have never really wanted to. The idea of striking out in an RV or something does occasionally cross my mind.

When the stress of working is gone...real life becomes like a longggggggg vacation so the desire to "get away" kinda drifts out to sea...sometimes it comes back, but then drifts again.

Now the people I know that work jobs...they LOVE to travel...to talk about travel...to plan travel. I think they love the feeling of being "free" from the rat race.

I talked to a woman that was all about travel and told her it's mostly a woman thing to want constant travel. She said she's on a ******** travel group and when she looked, most of the members were women. She said there were a few men and they had told her they wanted to travel together. I had to break it to her that those dudes just wanted to travel around and bang her.

Not a 'year off' but I have done a lot of travel.

Our honeymoon was 5 weeks - we went around the perimeter of France together. We have travelled a lot together, and don't really 'skimp'. Once we did a trip to Modena because I scored a reservation at Osteria Francescana (overrated!) and spent 2 weeks in Modena, Parma and Bologna (feasting).

Funnily enough on some of our longer vacations we end up 'missing the comforts of home'. And we go out of our way to stay in really nice places on vacation, but we just really like what we have.

I think our next vacation is probably going to be in Yellowstone. For us a week or two in/around a National Park (love this about the USA) is great. A balance between nature and city life.

Just try and set some rules for yourself. Drink and party only on weekends. Its easy to fall into a lifestyle of drinking every night in hostels and doing booger sugar on monday nights etc

i think it depends on your role. i've never done out of country, but i've traveled a decent bit and it works out great. start work at 7 a.m. -> you get done by noon, have the rest of the day to do whatever you want. have email on your phone incase you are needed, but that is extremely rare.

only thing is it's still too expensive imo to do this often, but if there is a festival/music show in a city, it's awesome to be able to fly there for the week, see the city/show, all while making money.

Lol doing booger sugar on Monday nights is lowkey one of the best parts lol.

Im a cryptocel and I mainly work as a hobby or if someone needs help. My bills are like $800 a month also. I don't always travel, but your money can go just as far or further just by being out of the country for an extended period of time. I just got back from a 3 month stay in Japan and spent maybe high $3k low $4k. Wasn't fully ratmaxxing so could have done it even cheaper. The Japanese dollar was a little weak at the time, but its still considered a high cost of living country. If you 3rd or 2 world ratmaxxed your dollar would go much further than staying in the states.

The "working class" travelcels that have 2 weeks of vacation a year if its approved will easily blow $3k+ in two weeks and waste 2-3 of those days just on the travel alone and spend 20-30% just on the ticket alone. It is beneficial to stay longer if you have the option which unfortunately most people don't thanks to the american work slave culture.

I wouldn't say its "worth it" to quit and do it unless it makes sense for you. If you have never stepped out of your comfort zone and just waged at a job you hate and never even leave your state then its probably a good idea to get out. Most peoples passports are stamped with Mexico or Paris which is just Florida extra and some uppity neighborhood in your state full of migrants. If you take a year off go to China and probably some Eastern euro chithole for at least a couple weeks or you wasted your time.

Preparing to do a version of this soon (keeping my remote job but just leaving the US). I was just gonna head to Nosara in Costa Rica for the winter but I have friends of friends in Argentina now so I may be headed down there afterwards.

As others have said the move is not to just be the typical American and hang out in the trendy expat/digital nomad areas, but to make friends with the locals and explore a bit off the beaten path.

I'd only consider it if I wasn't tied with a rent bill at the same time. So either travel while off a renter's lease (with intent to land another apartment shortly after coming back, and keep your chit in a storage unit or at a family/friend's place), have a mortgage (and keeping mortgage payments in mind, and someone to either rent it out to, and/or check-in on the house every so often), or have a paid off house.

Traveling in cheaper countries would solely cost the expense of the round trip flights ($3k-6k), and probably $1k-1.3k/mo on top of that. I'm thinking of Philippines when I say this btw, Googled the numbers. So if it's a whole year you might want $30k. Not factoring in any on-going rent/mortgage/storage bills you've still got on yourself from back home.

Traveling is overrated. You go to some chithole country, get treated like chit, food is chit and overpriced, miss the comfort and routine of your own home, could be spending the money on sht that actually matters like motorcycles or cars and mods which give u much more long-term enjoyment and no nostalgia, could be making money (but being more relaxed about it during vacation time, and no nostalgia, probably will get sick in some way, etc

Says people travel to brag and for social reasons. Dumps money into a chitbox to sit in traffic and "mog" other carcels. I like to travel so I can get away from ****s like you. When im not in the states conversations about sports, work, cars, netflix basically don't exist anymore.

Lol this is so true. Although I still had a decent time, Europe is by far my least favorite solo travel destination. It’s a place for novice travelers.

In Peru right now and just flew in from Ecuador.

I can't do trips longer than 30 days any more. I need to go home and recharge and have some semblance of routine and normalcy.

Once you travel a lot you realize the opportunity costs associated with it(establishing a life and family at home, relationships with friends, career growth etc.) and how monotonous it can get. I can't be bothered to visit another cathedral and I used to love flying but now it's such a chore. I flew like 57 times last year.

Definitely do it for a year but I bet 4 months in you'll get bored and want some normalcy and routine. Most recommend hunkering down at one place for a few weeks or so then continue.

this is exactly what I did. I signed a lease for new apt in the end of summer, then spent 2 months on the road with no rent
