Is Labor Day really the best day to buy a new mattress?
Or is it kind of like Black Friday where it's the same price throughout the year but advertised more on that special day?
Also what kinds of mattresses should I look at? I need something more firm but I keep reading about foam mattresses. No idea how those could be firm but w/e.

No.
I used to sell mattresses.
They expect customers on labor day and mlk weekend and the like so they dont need to discount them as much.
Mid week on a normal week they will work with you way more.
