what does sleeping on the couch mean in a marriage or relationship?

never understood this like when the wife gets mad at the hubby he’s forced to sleep on the couch as a punishment? how can someone allow that jfl i hear this saying alot but i never really figured what it means

and people joke about it too like how can you allow such disrespect imagine some slut kicking you the bed that you paid for and forcing to sleep on a little ass couch jfll
