Update: Landlord forcing me to transfer Apts to raise rent

For the unaware
https://forum.obnoxiousbrutes.com/showt...4061283&page=1

Cliffs:
-Landlord forcing me to transfer to a different (newly renovated unit) so they can renovate my current apartment but my rent will increase by almost $1000/month from $1800>$2790/month

-The alternative is to be given a 60 day eviction notice. Even though my lease isn't up until May of '24.

AUG 30TH UPDATE:

I'm taking the apartment they're offering.

She didn't tell me how much of an upgrade it would be. I thought it would simply be a direct transfer to a similar apartment, but apartments like mine are all filled up already. This will be a:

-3rd story corner building apartment with a curved balcony.

-Indoor washer drier

-bathroom has the "rain shower head" instead of the crappy wall mounted shower head.

-personal car garage.

-because it took so long for me to respond she lowered the monthly rent from $2790 to $2395/month

-i can start moving in Sept 1st and I have until Oct 1st to be completly moved in, so I basically have the entire month of September to move.

-AND because it's a transfer of apartments, there is no checkout procedure so I'll get to keep my full initial deposit regardless of the damage I've done (since they're going to renovate my current unit).

It's gonna set me back a bit with regards to saving up for a house, but from what I'm coming from, its a deal. I'm currently in a bottom floor apartment with a shared laundry room and just an open awning to park my car. The fact that I get my own personal locked garage is worth the price alone. I've got a 10th gen Honda and I've been nervous of someone stealing its cat since I bought it. A replacement (if stolen) is about $5k. So I'll gladly eat the $600 more per month

Get a cat guard! I've got an older Toyota pickup that is commonly targeted for cat theft so I put a CatClamp on it and have never had a problem

Yeah I was looking into those but thieves will still damage to car to lift it up...or they'll just steal the rims.

Also, I'm about 25minutes from the Mexico border so if a car is stolen its basically gone forever and taken apart for scraps. Granted I have a manual so that's a tiny bit of protection, I just don't want my car vandilized.

Sounds like a deal for a rentcel anyway. Major upgrade, and you (even if unknowingly) managed to get a lower price than asking. Couldnt image paying 3k to rent a place though. But times are tough i guess.

Im assuming that doesnt include utilities?

Ouch.

It includes water but not electricity. Same as my current place. And my SDGE bill is only about $30-40/month

Thats my assumption at least. It's a 1be/1ba and the tenant is not allowed to have roommates in those units since it's not meant to accommodate more than 1 person. So they haven't been able to fill it.

She initially told me $2790 because that is the market rate, but I think there was always a plan for some kind of discount, she just didn't know how much it would be.

Are you happy with the rent price? Sounds wild to me that a $3k a month apt would be in an area you had to worry about your car being stolen. It is California though and I know housing is high there

Is your current apt a 1bd/1bath as well?

For the area, oh yes. It's not just the area but the location as well. When I have to go to work I don't even get on the freeway.

I'm also in an opposing flow of traffic since not a lot of people live here. When I'm traveling north to go to work, traffic is heavy going south and when I'm going home south traffic is heavy going north.

Funny enough the upper income areas are EXACTLY where the theives go because there's less policing (less crime) and it's where all the valuable property is at.

The only sirens I hear in my area are ambulances and fire trucks because there's a lot of old people that live here that are croaking left and right.

Or she's under pressure to fill up the empty apartments. They'll do almost whatever they have to do to get you to accept. You're a tick on a box. Inb4 your old apartment is 10x better than your "new" one.
