Who would you say are the modern versions of famous pre-70s era actors? The actors nowadays who come the closest to replicating their acting style and persona.

In my opinion

James Dean - Heath Ledger
Marlon Brando - Tom Hardy
Paul Newman - Brad Pitt
Gary Cooper - Joaquin Phoenix
Rock Hudson - Henry Cavill
Cary Grant - George Clooney
Errol Flynn - Chris Hemsworth
James Stewart - Tom Hiddelston
Clark Cable - Russell Crowe
Tyrone Power - Jake Gyllenhaal
Robert Mitchum - Michael Shannon
James Cagney - Ryan Gosling

Nicolas Cage is the leading man incarnate of character actor Timothy Carey.

They bear more than a resemblance too. They have a very similar wild over the top manic style as well.

Here he is describing what is would be like if he was in The Godfather:

The man was a hoot, and entertaining as hell to watch.

I would work backwards. The problem is that today's leading actors can play just about any role, whereas James Dean or John Wayne were always essentially the same character with a little different background. Take Matthew McConaughey for example, in MUDD he's a relatable outlaw hiding from a murder charge, early actors could have done that role. They couldn't have done Dallas Buyers Club or Magic Mike tho.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Dean didn't live long enough to grow into his own. He's more akin to River Phoenix than anyone.

Doesn’t exist, they’re all phågs now srs. All the past leading men were vets of at least 1 world war. they lived fast and hard and oozed charisma. Modern men are limp wrists.

Steve McQueen, Eastwood, Newman, grant, bogart, etc. were a product of their (long gone) time
