I'm thinking of getting a 4k tv. I was assuming that in this day and age all sports broadcasts would be 4k 120hz, but research is telling me that most sports are actually still in 720p, occasionally 1080, and there is very rarely any actual 4k, and def not 120hz... maybe the super bowl is in 4k but thats about it... I'm hearing that supposed 4k content is really just scaled up from 1080 signal anyways. All I really watch on tv is sports. All movies and tv shows I stream/torrent. So I guess there's bluray movies that are 4k. I have a 4k monitor for gaming, and I only game on PC. (PC Master Race). It's definitely worth having a 4k monitor for pc games, no question. But I'm having a hard time justifying buying a 4k tv right now. I'm totally shocked at how little actual content there is considering 4k displays are so common/affordable.

What actual content are people watching in 4k? Is there any way to get NBA/NHL/MLB games in native 4k?(not upscaled from 720/1080)

If you are buying a new TV in 2023 you'd have to actually go out of your way to find a tv that's not 4k. It's simply just the standard.

Quality just depends on source. I don't watch much sports so I don't know how to get that in best quality.

I know practically all new tv's are 4k. If I didn't already have a tv, I would certainly just buy one. But I already have a 1080p tv. If the content I actually watch is still only available in 1080, then there's no reason to upgrade. Convince me otherwise by telling me what actual 4k content is available.

So I'll say it again: Sell me on 4k.

Srs tho Even if the content isn't true 4k inew tvs have really good upscaling tech. Everything looks better more or less.

Even if it's upscaled from 1080 it's still gonna look better than just 1080 right? Like I game on a (PS5 master race) and games aren't running native 4k, they are upscaled but look so much crisper than 1080p....especially if you're on a big TV that amplifies the ugly effect of low resolutions. Most chit on cable and streaming may not be true 4k but they definitely aren't 1080p I can promise you that.

If all you watch is live sports then there's no reason to upgrade tbh.
Torrents are in 4k these days though, YTS/YIFY etc nearly always have 4k download options. I download them and simply right click the file and click 'cast' from my laptop direct to my tv and the picture is bluray quality

It might be worth it to watch blu-ray rips and other 4k torrents. I'll have to go through and see how much of my collection can be upgraded. Sports in 4k 120hz would be hnnnng I'm disappointed this isn't widespread yet.

sports is probably the only thing that doesn't look as good upscaled from its 720p/1080p signal.

i think it might be because of the camera view of the entire field of play and the players being smaller in that scale. it looks great when the image is larger like zoomed in to their faces. i can definitely say my 1080p plasma is better for NFL football than my LG 4k TV and LG 4k OLED TV sets.


if you want true 4k you are going to need to use bluray and/or have your actual source media (torrents or something) be the actual bluray rip which is fukin crazy big like 40gbs and more for a single movie, some of the other torrents titled 4k or bluray are just rips from those sources but they are scaled down and stripped to make it file size friendly cause TBH i'd rather have a 2-4gb "4k" movie than a 40gb movie

Depends on your equipment. With a high end tv and sound system the quality difference between a 4k rip (~5-10gb) and 4k bluray remux (~40-80gb) is yuuuge. Ain't no going back from that.

my media consumption is mainly family (2 kids) they watching mario movie/grinch/etc whatever movies kids like to watch. I just get them the smaller 4k rips lol. ain't no way them cartoons need that 40-80gb source file lol.
